Smokey Johnson shares his roots in music with us on our tour of the Musicians Village. And he gave us the most delicious tomatoes from his garden. Joseph "Smokey" Johnson is one of the musicians, session players, and songwriters who have served as the backbone for New Orleans' output of jazz, funk, blues, soul, and R&B music. Johnson served as the drummer for Fats Domino in the 1950s and 1960's More on Smokey: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smokey_Johnson We were led through true tales of the 9th Ward pre and post "event" by Queen Cherice Harrison-Nelson. Our good friend and driver, Skip, gave a special and emotional tour through his experience during and after "the event" (aka Katrina). We talked to Steven, who was in the 8th grade when the levees broke and heard of his journey and that of his grandmther and mother, who is a matriarch of the community. We touched the levee wall and had a moment of silence for those who lost their lives and lives of their loved ones. Then we headed to the Musicians Village where we met some music legends, Al "Carnival Time" Johnson and Smokey Johnson. We ended the day at the home of Mrs. Harrison, mother of Cherice and major child activist.
