Thanks to Mauro Zinni, in 2012 History channel gave us the privilege to develop one of their most important animated pieces. A 30 second Ident which takes us through the history of humanity, a pretty nice challenge. A non-stop tale starting with the dicovery of fire, Gutenberg's Printing Press, the industrial revolution, the DNA chain structure, the man on the moon and many more. Indeed a beautiful working experience for the team. Here in Plenty we hope you enjoy the journey. • Vikings 'Main Titles'

The Mill created the opening titles to the History Channel’s epic new drama series ‘Vikings’. From concept art, through to production, edit, compositing and final grade, the titles immerse viewers into the world of the mighty Norsemen. They follow the separation of a Viking from the living. He slips into darkness amongst ornaments of his life; weaponry, gold and bone. His fading memory flickers throughout before he is consumed by one of the ‘Sisters’, a Norse goddess. He is left a shell below the waves before we learn he is not alone, but one of many sinking below the creeping surge of Viking raiders above. As the titles draw to a close the fiery massive raid assaults a darkened coast line.

Ritual. Supernature. Memory. Visions. Salt. Gold. Smoke. Sex. Metal. Blood. Gods. Fire. Death. Honor. Family... and the Sea. To develop the sequence we sought the haunting, ancient, fearsome, visceral part of us. The Viking Part. It began with music. Fever Ray's "If I Had A Heart" was our first move, and it became the soundtrack to our development, our pitch, and eventually the finished work. The sequence was inspired by a folktale found in The Sagas. That of the nine sisters, the goddesses of the waves, that would pluck Viking explorers from their ships and pull them to a sensual, dark, watery grave. The Vikings' relationship with death was built on honor, inevitability, sex, and the constant presence of gods pulsing through every grain of sand and swell of the ocean. We follow the separation of a Viking from the living. He slips into darkness amongst ornaments of his life. Weaponry, gold and bone. His fading memory flickers throughout before he is consumed by one of the Sisters. He is left a shell below the waves before we learn he is not alone, but one of many sinking below the creeping surge of Viking raiders above. A fiery, massive raid assaults a darkened coast line. The concept and visual was fleshed out in collaboration with Art Director Audrey Davis. The shoot took place in a pool and the beaches of Pre-Sandy New Jersey with a sturdy and dedicated small crew, led by DP Khalid Mohtaseb. Editors Ryan McKenna and Jessica Ledoux conquered my mountains of footage. The superb composite work was accomplished by Westley Sarokin, Danny Morris and Suzanne Dyer. Final color by the very talented Damien Van Der Cruyssen. All live action and post production produced at The Mill. The people at History Channel, Spain, called us to work for them producing an entire graphic promo for their new ‘Jazz Special’ show. The tempo was given by an Ella Fitzgerald particular song, really fast and catchy. We organized all into the morphologic concept of circles. Shapes and instruments, all arranged together in a circular way, reviewing in 20 sec the history of jazz throughout its main instruments. Watch it and don’t go dizzy! I'm making my national TV debut on History Channel, Saturday Dec. 1st at 12 noon as the host of UnScrewed...but here's the catch. This is just the pilot episode and unless you and all your friends watch it, I'll be left to consider what might have been with "Right Said Fred", "Biz Markie", "Crash Test Dummies" and the rest of the one-hit wonders. That's not a party I want to go to so please watch and maybe, just maybe History Channel will pick up the option. -John
