Teacher training in Malawi that aims to reduce the risk of HIV infection amongst student teachers. The HIV/AIDS Clinic at Mtendere Hospital serves a region of Malawi where as many as 1 in 3 people are HIV positive. Clinics like Mtendere just don't have the resources to cope with the number of HIV and AIDS patients. The impact of HIV and AIDS has been such that the average life expectancy in Malawi is currently just 40 years. AIDS can affect the life of anyone. Young teachers are at serious risk of contracting AIDS. While awareness of HIV and it's transmission has increased dramatically, behaviour has not. The innovative Theatre for a Change programme works with Teacher Training Colleges like Lilongwe, to reduce the risk of HIV infection among trainee teachers and their future pupils. We see how using techniques based around interactive theatre performance, to encourage integrity in decision making, and the use of strong communication methods, can bring about a change of behaviour in these student teacher groups that are most at risk, thereby empowering them to safeguard their own future. The Theatre for a Change programme concludes by encouraging the trainee teachers to set up workshops that enable their own pupils to look at stigmatisation, gender and sexual rights in a safe environment, thereby promoting proliferation of the core principles of the programme itself. Using exercises focusing on voice, body and movement, they learn how to say no to sex and how to make choices about relationships that will safeguard their future and ensure that they themselves stay HIV free. Theatre for a Change works in Teacher Training Colleges to reduce the risk of HIV infection among teachers and their future pupils. We will reach 7,200 student teachers and 72,000 children in Malawi over the next 3 years.
