1. Mars - "Take Part" - Documentary

In his latest for Mars, via BBDO Toronto, Emmy award winning documentary filmmaker and Holiday Films director Doug Pray brings some welcome warmth to Grand Manan, New Brunswick, with a community ice hockey project. The island of Grand Manan is a small fishing community one and a half hour’s sail from the mainland, and last year the island got what every small Canadian town dreams of – its own ice hockey rink. This winter, Mars partnered with Hockey Canada to lend a helping hand by adding in a heated mezzanine, keeping out the cold for spectators cheering on their players who could now have the chance to become the future Sidney Crosbys of the game. • La Dualidad De Bruna

      from Sasha Levinson Added 169 0 0

Holiday Films director, Sasha Levinson shoots Bruna Sedo, fashion designer for Barcelona fashion house Lurdes Bergada and independent artist – La Dualidad de Bruna (The Duality of Bruna). Bruna’s formidable imagination spills out onto her sketchbooks where she works up stories of life and death and transformation, which she then uses to create dolls. Bruna loves spontaneity so it’s not surprising when in between moving homes she found herself without her painting supplies yet needed to get some new ideas down on paper so she was inspired to draw in her sketchbook with make-up. “Make-up is something I identify with. Because of the tones/hues it produces some really beautiful things”. The drawings are the basis of character studies for her doll creations involving tragic stories where the subject has died in a heroic or creatively adventurous way. A reoccurring story theme in Bruna’s creations is conjoined twins, which deals with the trauma of separation. Bruna tells us the story about a prince who falls in love with one of the twins but not the other. He invites them over for a romantic dinner and in the process of separating them they die. Only in the afterlife do they become reunited again. Every one of her doll creations is unique with a provocative story to tell. When Sasha met Bruna in Spain she immediately saw there was an interesting story to be told so she started shooting right then and there with her iPhone. This was the inspiration for a return visit with her proper camera gear. “Bruna explores vast life questions in such a poetic and unusual way. She embodies the idea of duality. The siamese twin theme is completely alluring to me. The idea that two souls are so connected that one cannot live without the other- I love this. We see this film as the beginning. We’ve scratched the surface and now we are working to bring our next collaboration into focus”. The resulting short film is a remarkably casual and candid exploration of how Bruna’s creative ideas are ignited and brought to life.

        • Switzerland, Italy and Berlin on Super8; October 2007

          from Ben Beath Added 71 0 0

Over a several days in 2007, my sister and I travelled by train from Zurich down to Genoa. Along the way we stopped off in Lucerne and the alpine valley town of Lauterbrunnen, and powered through Cinque Terre in 30 degree heat just in time to make the evening train back to Milan. Climbing above the cloud line on Mt Pilatus was the highlight for me -- for my sister, seeing "real Swiss cows with real Swiss bells!!!!" was the standout moment. Travelling with a Super8 camera makes for some great looking holiday memories, but what this footage doesn't show is how much of a pain in the proverbial the whole exercise was. I guess it all comes down to perspective: what I had romanticised as being a fun exercise in nostalgic filmmaking, airport security saw as a man intending to board the plane with something that was black, gun-shaped and complete with a trigger... The track is "Oh Yeah" by Housse de Racket.

On Thursday, May 11th we hosted our second annual Producers Unite event at Toronto's Thompson Hotel. Nearly 100 of the city’s agency producers assembled for an evening of networking, information sharing and general fun, aimed to unify the community through conversation (and a few cocktails). Building on the success of our inaugural gathering of freelance producers last year, we added to the experience by inviting on staff agency producers and including a panel of leading heads of production, who discussed topics such as the ongoing challenges of producing for digital, finding the appropriate talent, common pitfalls of producing evermore diverse types of content, and mentoring. Panelists included: Cynthia Heyd, Vice President, Integrated Production at TAXI Canada; Beatrice Bodogh, Vice President/Head of Broadcast Production at BBDO Toronto; Janice Bisson, Head of Production at Juniper Park; Ann Rubenstein, Freelance Producer and former Head of Production at Rethink; and Sarah Michener, VP, Manager, Broadcast Production at MacLaren McCann. The session was moderated by former Boards editor and freelance journalist Rae Ann Fera. A spirit of openness and sharing permeated the conversation. While conscious of the oft-sensitive nature of specific jobs, all panelists agreed on a need to be more forthcoming with each other when it comes to knowledge sharing. Given how many pressures producers face – from budgets to tight timelines, cost controllers, and the rigors of being content producers versus TV producers – the overall sentiment was that there’s strength in facing the difficulties of work through unity. Freelance Producer Kali Kyriazis was the winner of our door prize – a trip for two to NYC, which includes airfare and three nights stay at the Thompson LES. Thank you to everyone who made the night a success. We look forward to seeing you next year.

Who doesn’t like a good helicopter shot. How about inside a building? Or 10ft above a horse & carriage? Or low over a vineyard without any rotor wash? These new stabilized heli-cams can do all that and more. Here’s two and a half minutes of delicious aerial amazement courtesy of Holiday Films’ director, Henry Less.
