          • Breaking the Veil of Silence - by Jobst Bittner

The Veil of Silence probably concerns you more than you think. The Veil of Silence is passed down through the generations and prevents reconciliation, healing, and restoration – for us personally, in families and churches, as well as in cities and nations. Without realizing it, many families live under the Veil of Silence. They are children and grandchildren of the Holocaust generation or descendants of the perpetrators and still carry the burden both of guilt or trauma, as well as the experiences of flight and expulsion. Their common mark is silence. Many of them are going through endless deserts without ever seeing any hope of change. Do we, once again and without realizing it, belong to the “silent majority” and have nothing to answer the spirit of this age? Is there a way how we can achieve spiritual breakthroughs and far-reaching change in our cities and nations? Starting with his own experiences in Tuebingen – a university town in Germany that used to be one of the ideological centers during the Nazi era that produced executioners and mass murderers –, Jobst Bittner highlights the biblical-theological, church historical, and psychological perspective on the Veil of Silence and how we can break it. Why should you read this book? And why a book by a German pastor at that? As the German nation, we know what it means to be covered by darkness and to lie captive in the dark. I call it the veil of silence. But then the Lord healed our nation. The dividing wall between East and West fell in 1989, and to this day it is a miracle in my eyes. Today Germany stands firmly by Israel’s side. But still this veil of silence has not yet disappeared over us. There is an anti-Semitism that is deeply rooted in us, which is so much more than rejecting Jewish life and having an anti-Israel attitude. This kind of anti-Semitism is like a negative seed that is deeply hidden in our Western culture and mindset that can break out again at any given moment. And we do not only find this in Germany. It also exists in the United States...

Student film made during my BA (Photography and Multimedia) at Eugeniusz Geppert Academy of Art and Design, Wroclaw, Poland Animation based on a Tadeusz Różewicz poem "Pigtail" When all the women in the transport had their heads shaved four workmen with brooms made of birch twigs swept up and gathered up the hair Behind clean glass the stiff hair lies of those suffocated in gas chambers there are pins and side combs in this hair The hair is not shot through with light is not parted by the breeze is not touched by any hand or rain or lips In huge chests clouds of dry hair of those suffocated and a faded plait a pigtail with a ribbon pulled at school by naughty boys.
