My name is Evan Kleinman and I am a grandchild of Holocaust survivors. When I was thirteen years old, my grandparents, both the only surviving members of their families, were interviewed by the USC Shoah Foundation Institute. After hearing their stories for the first time, I just barely began to understand what they had endured. I always felt a trip to Poland, the birthplace of my grandparents and home to my family for generations, might be the key to a better understanding. In this first-person documentary, my parents, sister and I make the journey together and walk the earth where our family was meant to be destroyed. While confronting the horrors of our past, we ultimately discover the great miracle of our existence today and leave a marker behind that tells the world: WE ARE STILL HERE.

This is a moving profile of Luba Frederick, who lost her family in Auschwitz but went on to save 55 children at the Bergen Belsen concentration camp. I found the story when a number of the (now-grown) children she saved gathered to celebrate her and stayed at my father's Florida hotel. He told me about her remarkable courage. I was the senior producer of this story, which won a National Emmy.

Young German violinist Arabella Steinbacher joins us for Hartmann’s notoriously difficult and rarely performed Concerto Funebre as well as Mozart’ Rondo in C major and Adagio in E major. Hartmann’s concerto was written at the beginning of WWII and was inspired by his feelings about the Nazi annexation of Czechoslovakia. Composers’ early and late works appropriately begin and end our program: Strauss’ Serenade in E-flat major, which he wrote at the tender age of eighteen, opens the concert and Haydn’s final symphony— Symphony No. 104 “London” – will bring the program to a richly melodic conclusion.
