    Eugene describes his arrival in the 'hellhole' of Bergen Belsen. He explains the terrible conditions, surrounded by death and disease, and the lengths prisoners would go to to stay alive. His weight dropped to about five stone through lack of food. On 15 April the camp was liberated by the British army. Eugene describes how 'all hell was let loose'. He describes working in slave labour conditions for five months, moving rocks for the drilling of tunnels where the V1 and V2 rockets were being manufactured. He describes the lack of food and the atrocious conditions in which the slave labourers lived.

              In March 1944 the German forces occupied Hungary. Eugene describes being made to wear a star of David and how his family home became part of the ghetto. On 14 May he returned home from school to find his family being loaded onto an army truck. He describes the journey to Auschwitz by cattle wagon, and their realisation that the story they had been told, that they were going to Hungary to work, was not true.

                Eugene describes his arrival in Auschwitz as a boy of 16. He was immediately separated from his mother and sisters, then from his father. He never saw any of them again. He describes feeling absolutely numb as they were stripped, shaved, showered and disinfected. He describes the routine of life in Auschwitz, living 900 people to a block and sharing a bare wooden bunk with 4 other people, with barely any food.
