                  • Where Did my Thyroid Go Wrong?

from Lee Memorial Health System Added 37 0 0

For an organ so small, it shoulders a lot of responsibility. Weighing in at between 15 to 20 grams, our thyroid carries a lot of weight. “It produces a hormone called l-Thyroxine. This hormone regulates and controls metabolism in all cells in your body,” says Dr. Heitham Ajlouni, who is an endocrinologist with Lee Memorial Health System. Despite it’s small size, the thyroid can cause big problems if it is not working properly. “Any malfunction, less production or overproduction, can affect mostly all your body,” says Dr. Ajlouni. Thyroid conditions fall into three basic classifications. “Disease that is related to function. Either like you’re underproduction, which we call hypothyroid, or overproduction, which we call hyperthyroidism, and also problems that is related to size. So we call it goiter. Or cancer that affect thyroid gland, and there is some inflammatory disease that affect the thyroid also,” says Dr. Ajlouni. One of the more perplexing aspects of a thyroid disorder is recognizing it. Although they come with a long list of symptoms, people are slow to connect them. Graves’ Disease, which is caused by overproduction of hormones, can actually alter the appearance. “You will start losing weight regardless of your appetite. And also you have changes of your hair and skin. You will have like heat intolerance, excess of sweating. And the most common things that people know also Graves’ disease affect the eye. So their eyeball will protrude,” says Dr. Ajlouni. Most common in women, Graves’ disease is controlled by destroying the thyroid’s function. Doctors can manage most conditions, once they get a handle on where the thyroid went wrong. Chiasma, Inc., a U.S. privately–held biopharma company developing octreotide capsules for the orphan condition acromegaly, today announced two new studies presented at the 97th Endocrine Society (ENDO) Annual Meeting in San Diego, Calif. The studies provide additional data from Chiasma’s Phase III trial and new findings on the patient burden of current injection therapies. “We now have data to help clinicians determine whether octreotide capsules, if approved, are likely to help their patient with acromegaly maintain response,” said Shlomo Melmed, M.D., senior vice president and dean, Cedars–Sinai Medical Center, Los Angeles and global study principal investigator. “Furthermore, the Phase III results show the safety and efficacy of octreotide capsules can be reliably determined within 12 weeks of initiating therapy.” To view the Multimedia News Release, go to http://www.multivu.com/players/English/7436451-endo-chiasma-clinical-data/
