After twenty years of civil war Somalia nowadays is one of the poorest and most dangerous nations in the world. Avoiding the risk of being killed or forced to fight in a infinite war many of its inhabitants try to move to foreign countries. Considering its position in the Mediterranean Sea and the colonial past that links it with Somalia, Italy is one of the favorite destinations for people who flee the Horn of Africa country. The common way to reach the Italian coast is to cross the desert by bus or truck to arrive at the shipping points near the city of Tripoli. If the present uncertain local political situation doesn't permit a coherent analysis of the condition of the refugees on the Libyan territory, during the Qaddafi regime, the 2008 agreements between Libyan and Italian governments (with a clear advantage also for other European countries), entailed that the North African country kept in jail the migrants, usually imprisoned to blackmail their families, in order to prevent their departure. The lucky ones who survived the long and dangerous trip have the right to be put under International Protection, according to the Refugee Convention that Italy and others European countries subscribed in Geneva during 1951. However the assistance from the Italian state ends here. Except for some sporadic intervention the government doesn't manage any program to provide housing for refugees, to help them learning Italian, to help them to find a job. So, many of them live in abandoned buildings or, when these buildings are evicted, in some welcome centre for refugees only able to host them for few months. In this situation, moving from a makeshift accommodation to another, trying, often helped by local NGOs, to learn Italian and to find a job, Somali refugees struggle to live a normal life forced to remain in Italy in compliance to the Dublin II Agreement (now Dublin III), that prevents people, who are recognized as refugees in an European country, to live in a different one (according to that agreement asylum seekers have to present their request for the refugee status in the country through which they first entered the European Union).

Filmed in Asmara, Eritrea ,during a special Palm Sunday Baptism, Samantha was able to attend the mass baptism in the Nda Mariam Church with all of the women dressed in the traditional white cloth seen in Eritrea. Onnalee is a tribute to Samantha's grandmother who passed away a few months earlier. The concept of travel here is not geographical, but from life to the next "destination."

This was an awesome project that I did for a friend as a donation for a great event that she was hosting. A night dedicated to celebrating a variety of cultures and backgrounds in an effort to raise funds for a sensitive cause. While the words are indeed touching, I was only blessed with the opportunity to serve as the cinematographer and the editor. Camera: Canon 5D Mark II Lens: Canon 50mm 1.8

28 March 2014 – Ahead of Chinese President Xi’s visit to the European Union in Brussels, a significant naval exercise has taken place in the Gulf of Aden to demonstrate the growing cooperation between the EU and China on issues of international security and defence. EU Naval Force warships, FS Siroco and FGS Hessen conducted a joint counter-piracy exercise with two Chinese Navy ships, CNS Yancheng and CNS Taihu. The exercise, which took place at sea in the Gulf of Aden, had followed a day of pre-briefings on board FS Siroco, when the EU Force Commander, Rear Admiral Herve Blejean, welcomed Senior Captain Li Pengcheng and the rest of the Chinese delegation to the EU Naval Force flagship to discuss the exercise and the various events that would take place the following day. read more... http://eunavfor.eu/eu-naval-force-and-chinese-navy-warships-work-together-in-counter-piracy-exercise-at-sea-in-gulf-of-aden/

Djibouti is in northeast Africa, at the tip of the Horn of Africa, and at the entrance to the Red Sea. It borders Ethiopia, Eritrea, and Somalia. It is a small country, about the size of Wales (UK). But it packs a punch, with some stunning places to visit. For example Lac Assal, at the lowest point in Africa, fringed by dazzling salt flats. And Lac Abbe, in its landscape of limestone chimneys. If you want to chill out, Moucha Island is ideal. In summer Djibouti gets very hot, so the best time to visit this beautiful country is between October and April.

More than one million left their homes to seek safety. Potable water is an expensive commodity on the local market which lacks any control. No national government exists. The Polish Humanitarian Action has built 11 wells in a refugee camp for internally displaced persons in Garowe, the capital city of the autonomous region of north Somalia called Puntland. It supplies water to 20 thousand people living in an extreme life situation. The PHA also builds berkads: natural reservoirs for rainwater harvesting near local schools. Thanks to berkads, school fees can be lower. Only 20 per cent of children attend primary schools, and only 6 per cent go on to learn in secondary schools. Maternal and infant mortality rates in Somalia are the worst in the world. One in ten Somali women dies during pregnancy or childbirth, the same share of babies don't live to see their first birthday. There are two reasons for it: poor health care and infections from dirty water.
