Screened at the Horniman Museum, London, on February 26 2015, on the occasion of the Chinese New Year. Here the link to the event: http://www.horniman.ac.uk/visit/events/chinese-late Animation: Chiara Sgatti Composer: Tommaso Ferrini The passage from the old to the new year/spring, that in China are both happening at the same time during the New Year's Eve , a party that goes on for 15 days, starting with the new moon and ending with the full moon. There’s an ancient myth about this celebration, narrating of an half lion-half bull monster called Nian (that at the same time represents the year, since "Nian" in Chinese means "year"), that every new year came and destroied villages and eat people, untill one day they discovered he could be chased away with strong lights, the colour red and loud noises. I summerized the monster, keeping only the scary and basic features of each animal, lion and bull. The place where he is running is the sky, turned upside down, where the moon is growing, represented by the growing crack from which the moonlight filters. The Nian, ignoring how dangerous that could be, follows the light coming from the crack. This run, unaware and somehow unscapable, represents time that passes by, inescabable. The crack becomes a proper hole, the full moon. The Nian is scared, but it is too late: the old year is destroied, spring comes.

Shot in the fish & amphibian research department of the the Horniman Museum, these baby tree frogs are about 2.5cm long, and very, very sleepy. With thanks to Nadia Jogee for this letting me wake her frogs up and stick a menacingly gigantic lens in their face. Filmed and edited by Max Morris-Doherty.

In May 2013, the Horniman Walrus made his way to Margate to feature in the Hayward Touring exhibition Curiosity: Art & The Pleasures of Knowing at Turner Contemporary. The famously over-stuffed walrus, weighing in at just under one ton, had been in the Horniman Museum's Natural History Gallery since 1901. Since then, he hadn't moved more than 25 feet, so getting him out and on his way to the coast was a huge task. Captured using Panasonic GH1 and GH2s, manually moving along a Konova slider
