"The Bulls of B.A.D." was captured during four days of diving with Beqa Adventure Divers in Beqa Lagoon, Fiji. I used a RED Epic camera shooting in 5K resolution. Most of the footage is in 4x slow motion, some in 2x slow motion. The end of the video is in real time. This is one of the most spectacular shark dives in the world. If you like sharks, Beqa has to be on your bucket list. The Fijian divers of B.A.D. are exceptionally skilled and professional. And Beqa Adventure Divers is an outstanding operation in all regards.

      • Poetry eMotion: "Byron Beholds Kona"

Poetry has always been a mystery to me. Is it because I am not a gifted reader or am I too much of a scientific person? When my wife, Ellen Cuylaerts, told me some of my footage was poetry in her eyes, she encouraged me to reach out to poems through my films. I immediately understood her vision was bright, challenging and refreshing. I often shoot and edit my images in a poetic way, so the similarities became apparent. Thus came to life my newest production: “Poetry eMotion”. Need I say this self-explaining project combines the deep emotion of raw poetry with the motion of the deep. This first installment, “Byron Beholds Kona”, was shot entirely in Kona, Hawaii on a special expedition we made with very dear friends. I saw spinner dolphins playing cheerfully, soaring the sea, observing us with a child's curiosity as a beautiful contrast to the roving, feeding mantas at night.

This video is an excerpt from Seasons of the Sea, a film I made in 1990. At that time documentary films were captured in 16mm and transferred to one-inch video tape in standard definition. I am now slowly replacing the old standard definition images with more recently captured high definition images in an effort to rejuvenate the film. The images in this video were captured in either 4K or 5K digital cinema resolutions. 100% of all tips will be donated to BlueVoice.org. Late night, after all the operators left the site at the Sheraton in Kona, bringing their customers to the world famous “Kona Manta night dive” site, we went in the water with those magical creatures on our own. We attracted plankton, the favorite diet of the reef manta (Manta alfredi), towards our boat, the Kona Aggressor II. The plankton, which is attracted towards (moon)light, on its turn attracts the mantas. This spectacle gave us opportunity to have magical moments with these graceful giants. I shot this in 4K, ambient, to preserve the natural beauty of this underwater ballet.

I made this video to present at a Reef Check fund raiser a few years ago. The event was in Los Angeles and Reef Check wanted to feature California marine life. The video was originally called 100 Miles since the images were captured within 100 miles of the Reef Check venue. Most of this video was captured aboard one of the Truth Aquatics liveaboard dive boats out of Santa Barbara, California. We have made many films aboard their vessels including two IMAX features, and enjoyed countless days if great diving with their support.. Finally, people often ask where my favorite diving is. Well, on a good day, nothing beats the Southern California kelp forest. 100% of all tips will be donated to BlueVoice.org. Please support BlueVoice.org in their marine mammal conservation efforts.
