We follow two of Soweto’s Aids Orphans as they take the camera themselves to give us a glimpse of their lives. This is a pilot project for a larger initiative we are developing with children across five different countries. We cut this film with the support of Save the Children UK and their partner Noah’s Ark in South Africa. The Facts: South Africa has the largest HIV+ population in the world. There are 2.5 million orphans and half of them lost their parents to AIDS. 240,000 children under 15 are HIV+ themselves. Some AIDS orphans are left to run their households, looking after siblings and grandparents. All children have the right to the highest attainable standard of health (CRC art 24). The Thread: We encounter Koketso in the scrubland on the outskirts of Soweto at dusk. His friend approaches in silhouette. As the children chat homework and dinnertime, they wander past basket ball games and homecomings - a group of kids squeal past rolling old tyres. Back home, Koketso's mother asks, 'Go and get me some bread, child'. We are lead into a converted outhouse, the makeshift grocery store. A radiant smile greets. As the light fades, tired men return from building sites and factories. Kokestso opens the door to his small concrete house again, with corrugated iron roof. . . Produced by Rachel Searle, Fiona Harrington and Bryony Stokes Facilitated in country (including training and direction) by Dagmar Duportail and Fiona Harrington
