While in Northern Thailand, Mark and Emily meet with Digital Democracy's partner The All Burma IT Students' Union (ABITSU) to set up equipment and train ABITSU's core staff, as well as members of other human rights groups working along the border, in the uses and features of Handheld Human Rights (HHR) for its initial launch. HHR enables organizations to communicate securely through the use of mobile phones, and to make human rights data accessible and actionable. ABITSU, an organization that teaches the next generation of young leaders critical IT skills to be effective leaders in the 21st Century, also runs a school and technical support for human rights organizations working along the border. While working with ABITSU, Mark and Emily hear a powerful personal story from one of the organization's head trainers - his determination, at any cost, to do this important and necessary work.

"Der Überflieger - Wearable Interfaces for spy pigeons" is an experimental mediaart project that combines the dead medium of the homing pigeon with modern technologies such as GPS and digital photography. With the support of a local pigeon breeder and after several test flights it was possible to use homing pigeons for aerial photography and trace their route from the point of release back to the loft. The project demonstrates that the apparently forgotten medium of the homing pigeon combined with standard technology could be used for monitoring sourrounding area and exposing private or public activities, exposing its possibilities and dangers to society. This website and a DVD document the development, fabrication and testing of a wearable recording apparatus for pigeons.

This is a commentary on government surveillance, in the context of consumerism, and of people's allowing themselves to become objectified in exchange for material consumption. Will people's perspectives change if they see things through as the surveyor, or watch themselves be watched? Filmed on Black Friday (the day following Thanksgiving). The music used is a mix of Ash Ra Tempel's 'Traummaschine', and Salem's 'My Whore'.

What does war look like through the eyes of a 'child soldier'? This question has been investigated by journalists, yet it is rare to find a first-person account from someone who endured the atrocities and survived. Ishmael Beah, author of A Long Way Gone and UNICEF Advocate for Children Affected by War, will discuss his story of abduction and war in Sierra Leone. In a country ravaged by war, Beah spent several years with armed militia forces before finally being rescued and rehabilitated. Tens of thousands of children are recruited and used in various capacities by armed forces or armed groups in over 15 countries around the world. Beah will discuss the use children as a tool of war and how we can help stop it.
