Kasha Jacqueline Nabagesera, a Ugandan woman, is the founder and Executive Director of Freedom and Roam Uganda, a main lesbian, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) rights organization. Kasha has had the courage to appear on national television in Uganda, she has issued press statements on behalf of the gay community, and spoke on several radio stations. Already in 2007 she was harassed at the World Social Forum in Nairobi, and on many occasions afterwards she was hackled, threatened and even attacked by people for appearing in the media. Since then she has been shifting from house to house, afraid to stay long in the same place. On 26 January 2011 one of her colleagues, gay activist David Kato, was murdered following the publication of a “gay list” by the Ugandan tabloid Rolling Stone calling for their hanging; in this black list Kasha Jacqueline’s name also appears. The Chairman of the Jury of the MEA, Hans Thoolen, describes the laureate as “an exceptional woman of a rare courage, fighting under death threat for human dignity and the rights of homosexuals and marginalised people in Africa”. With this award the Jury wants to underline its position against the discrimination of people based on gender or sexual orientation.

This story takes place in the Island of Mucura, El Islote Island and in Rincon del Mar in the Atlantic coast of Colombia. In Rincon del Mar we met “E” who asked us to video-record her because she wanted to speak out. She wanted us to make her story public. Alexandra and I had to leave this town quickly because armed police kept coming to our hotel. They were uncomfortable with our cameras, and with our relationship with the local population.

After every five years, the time for general election comes in Bangladesh, bringing with it a fresh season of despair and uncertainty. From November 2013 to January 2014, the nation was passed through sheer horror and uncertainty due to the ongoing fierce political unrest that sparked from a couple of issues. Recently, the chronic violent political demonstration by the opposition allies started posing threat to the lives of common people. Random usage of handmade bombs on streets forced many to be blind and cut off physical organs, while patrol-bombs, hurled on running vehicles, burnt several people alive. The unconscionable political demonstration by the opposition parties and the illogical stance of the government are endangering the common people who are now the worst victim of this dirty political game. They talk about democracy, they talk about freedom, they talk about human rights, but where is their ideology when these half-burnt people moan on hospital beds? Where is their democracy when people die burning alive in running bus? Till now the death toll from Dhaka Medical Burn Unit is 391 and the number of injured victims are 21,574. “Shame on our dirty politics where power is more important than the welfare of people. Here in Bangladesh, people are the puppets in the hands of our political leaders” – said one of the victims of recent political demonstration.
