This is a 2D (left eye) from 3D teaser (https://vimeo.com/75123447) for Sea of Love 3D IMAX film, which is currently in development. The entire footage was shot with two 3Deep housings that won the top international award for innovation earlier this year in the USA. Up until now, capturing cinema-quality images underwater, especially in 3D, has meant large, cumbersome and expensive equipment, large camera crews, and images dramatically degraded by the underwater optics available. It’s made it almost impossible for film-makers to get close to the very creatures they’re trying to film. And it’s never been possible to capture images that match the quality you can get above water. Our inventions change all that. Instead of following the tradition of using large glass plates or domes in front of lenses designed for use on land, Achtel has adapted the latest digital cameras and used lenses designed specially for the very different optical conditions underwater. As a result, for the first time ever, the images from our camera systems produce pin-sharp, undistorted images suitable for the biggest cinema screens in the world. Unique custom optical filtering was applied to achieve improved water clarity as well as better blue colour definition. The teaser was conformed, 3D aligned, colour matched and graded at Sound Firm in Sydney (at Fox Studios) using the first 4k Mistika system in Australia. Enjoy!

            • Tonga Whales, above and below.

Humpback Whales make an annual migration to Tonga to give birth and also to frolic and mate during the stormy Antarctic winter. The pec-slaps by the adult whales are thought to be to communicate with other whales nearby, in addition to the whale song that you can hear (recorded via hydrophone). The train of whales that you can see is likely the end of something known as a 'heat run' - this is where the a group of males chase a female (the one next to the calf) until she picks the winner who impresses her the most. This is a first edit of footage shot in Ha'apai Tonga 2014, i'll try and make a full edit and post a 4k version in the near future. Shot using RED Epic primarily underwater, with some clips from Panasonic GH4. Aerials all done on DJI Phantom 2 with GoPro Hero 3+. We checked the rule book regarding our interactions with the whales and could find nothing to contradict what we were doing, and we made sure that we were very cautious to ensure we did not stress the animals. The operator we used is very respectful and I made sure we never pushed anything. https://www.facebook.com/uwuhd

Betrayal is a story about a woman who has been deeply betrayed. Believing she will never trust another again, she sinks into depression, severing all connections with her world. Plunging deep into despair, she experiences an unexpected visit by humpback whale calf, a being whose species has suffered the greatest of betrayals. Over 2 MILLION whales were killed by commercial whalers in the 20th Century, driving most great whale species to the brink of extinction. Finally in 1986, the Internataionl Whaling Commission (IWC) enacted a moratorium on commercial whaling, finally giving whales a reprieve from the mass slaughter, and offering these species a 12th hour chance at survival. Despite their suffering in the hands of humankind, this whale does the unexpected and invites the woman into its special world. Together they dance and play, shedding their fears and distrust. Discovering she is not alone in her betrayal, the woman is finally able to let go and forgive. She rediscovers joy, hope and love as she experiences a profound connection with this soulful being. As their time together draws to an close, the calf rejoins its mother and the woman must return to her world. Both the whales and the woman move on, vulnerable but ready to trust. Will we BETRAY them, again? Terra Naomi's song "I'll Be Waiting," from her album "Live & Unplugged": http://bit.ly/HFummP
