    • Hurricane Wilma Chase Intercept Highlights

On the early morning of October 24, 2005, Major Hurricane Wilma made landfall on the southwest Florida coastline as a moderate category 3 hurricane, with winds of 125mph. Wilma continued to track rapidly northeastward across the Florida peninsula, with a large 50-60 mile wide eye. Knowing the location of the landfall on the southwest coast of Florida is unpopulated, and has little coastal roads, plus, being dark still, I opted to intercept the eyewall over the interior counties and the east coast of Florida. I setup shop in a parking garage in downtown West Palm Beach, where I felt that the center of the eye would pass overhead. At first light, the winds began to pick up rapidly, with distant power flashes, as debris hit power-lines. With Wilma moving very fast, it wasn’t long before the hurricane force winds in the 100mph range, over took my location. I filmed the first half of the eastern eyewall for about 30-40 minutes, with debris flying around and palm tree’s bending in the violent winds. Then the calmer eye moved in, bringing the winds down for a good 45 minutes. The second half, or backside of the eye came raging in from the west. The winds quickly shifted northwest, and were gusting around 115mph at times. The storm then continued on out into the Atlantic, where it regained category 3 status. In this video, you’ll see all three stages of the storms passage as described above. The camera I used at the time, was a Sony VX2001.
