1. Hurricane Sandy soundscape design

    from Joey Huertas Added 27 0 2

Sound art should, can, and will continue to to be presented inside of galleries, museums, and other audio installation places in which sound can be addressed as a respected medium per se. Music, like drama, sets up a series of conflicts and resolutions, either on a larger or small scale. But what about other sound recorded instances, audio designs and odd spectacular moments? While it may be true that we gather the majority of our information visually, and that we are more responsive to visual than aural stimuli, as light is faster than sound, it's equally true (duh) that no one is comfortable with silence any more than they're comfortable with darkness , "aren't you still scared of the dark?" stay tuned for more ... this is a Jane Public work_in_progress ... All hurricane sound recordings completed 10/29/12. • Sandy in the East Village October 2012

                    from Don Yorty Added 100 1 0

November 1 I am writing to you from the Hurricane Sandy aftermath. Still no power in Lower Manhattan. The police station down the street has a large generator that is always loudly humming so even the quiet that so much of the East Village is enjoying today is spared us at 9th Street and Avenue C. There has been some damage in La Plaza, the park across the street from me. Another willow is damaged and a linden may need to be cut down. There are plans of planting apple and other fruit trees now instead of the willows because the recent hurricanes have been knocking them down and it may be time to rethink what can be planted. It is funny to think that I thought if the rain started to flood, I would simply go down with a rake and clean out the gutters. Well it wasn’t the rain, it was the sea that rose out of the gutters, which for me was an astonishing surprise, a lesson learned about what direction the disaster was coming from, and there was no stopping her, not inconsequential little me. There was the lovely smell of the salty sea however. Whole groves of trees are uprooted by the East River. You can see about three feet up the fences where the water rose and left its debris of plastic bags and other useless things to cover the athletic fields and cross the FDR Drive and the Jacob Riis projects over Ave D up to Avenue C where I live, the new sea line as climate change goes merrily on its way. This 3 minute vimeo spans 3 days in the East Village, October 29, 30 & 31. Today is November 1. For poetry & other stuff, check out my blog: donyorty.com/blog
