1. Gravel Alps Tour 2013

Inspired by the sense of freedom in riding new, unknown, unpaved roads and by some Rapha videos this winter I started drawing on the map a one-week trip on the western Alps between Italy and France. This area is full of old military road that can be ridden with a road bike fully loaded, the mind is already on the road. We start our trip in Susa and with a short first stage we reach the Giro's most famous gravel road of Colle delle Finestre, then we follow the stunning Strada dell'Assietta till Sauze d'Oulx, down to Bardonecchia and the day after two climbs to reach Briancon, the Col de l'Echelle and the very hard gravel of the Col du Granon. For the fourth day we take a pause and reach Embrun via the Col d'Izoard by a whole-paved stage, then came the bad luck. The cold and long winter cause the legendary tunnel on the top Col du Parpaillon to be still closed, we need to leave this pass for another time and reach Barcelonette by the Lac de Serre Poncon with a short morning stage. The day after the plan is to take the Cayolle road and when in Bayasse turn left on the gravel of Col de la Moutiere, but also in this case the guides of the Parc du Mercantour told us that the road n the top in not passable due to snow, bad luck strike again. Another change in the plan, but in this case the alternative is a great one, despite I rode the Bonette also two years ago it still remain a magic place, moreover with a perfect sunny day. Two gravel stages has transformed into paved ones, but we can't do nothing against the power of nature... Last stage took us from St. Etienne de Tinee to Cuneo via the Col de la Lombarde, a little bit boring on the french side, but a gorgeous landscape on the italian descent. Seven stages, seven pass (six above 2000 m), three gravel stages, six sunny and one rainy day, around 10120 m of ascent in 425 km!!! A great bike trip, I love gravel!!! Back to the past on the road of my childhood holidays, eleven years spent in Valtellina, and the last ones I pedalled some of these roads with my little bike!!! A one-day trip on a road less pedalled, a great climb, not famous as the Stelvio, different from a classic alpine pass, but always amazing. The last kilometres before the medieval Fraele's Towers are an incredible succession of hairpins, two tunnel into the rocks, the towers on the right and the grevel road to the Cancano Lakes, two artificial lakes created with the construction of a dam. Down on this road and back to the towers, three hairpins down and a turn right on another beautiful grevel road, the Decauville, a 9.7 km flat road on the side of the mountain, great landscapes and memories of the childhood riding this road as it was the hardest one... A short ride in the mountains, no traffic, some off-road...simply fantastic!!! Info & photos: http://www.giopirotta.it/wp/?escursioni=laghi-di-cancano Music: Bon Iver - Holocene

The classic Easter bike trip, this year there are some new entries in the group and all of them are the girlfriends of the three musketeers! :-) For two of them (Alessandra and Maddalena) it was the first bike trip! We begin our three-days trip in Rovereto and follow the river Adige till the city of Trento where we turn east towards the fantastic Valsugana cyclepath! We stop the first day in Borgo Valsugana and on Sunday we complete the cyclepath saying goodbye to Trentino and entering Veneto, that's why the trip was named Trentineto Tour (I know, probably there was something bettere, but that's it!). Last day is only a 40 km stage from Bassano del Grappa to Vicenza and unfortunately it's a rainy stage from start to end! It was an easy trip, we eat (a lot) and laugh all the time, it was very funny and I hope next year will be better! The usual Easter trip this year takes us from Savona (Italy) to Nice (France) along the coast of Ligury!!! Three days to cover 180 km without particular difficulties in terms of climbs, three days where we enjoy the bike, the sea and the food!!! Everything started back in 2010, when on the forum of the Associazione Italiana Il Cicloviaggiatore two guys had the idea of organizing a night ride! That was a great idea! This year we decided to ride from Soresina to Milan following the Vacchelli canal and country roads before entering the big city. We started at 22:30 and reached the Tombe Morte where three canals merge into one thanks to a superb hydraulic system. From there we follow the Vacchelli canal on the unpaved riverbanks till Crema where we stopped for a salame and wine party before reaching again the canal. We arrived in Spino by the 03:30 and from there we made some zig-zag between some paved roads and muddy paths. The lights of Milan are there in the distance, we abandoned the countryside and enter the sleeping city in a silent sunday morning, probably the best time to pedal in Milan. The arrival for this year's ride is at the Colonne di San Lorenzo, sleepy eyes in the group shot but everybody seems very happy! There were 31 riders this year and it's always an emotion seeing those little lights in the dark, we were freezing but never stopped laughing and knowing each other, the CicloNotturna is always a great experience! An incredible three-days bike trip in the Southern Alps near Cuneo! The first day we rode the not so known Strada dei Cannoni that took us at Colle Sampeyre on an amazing gravel road. After sleeping in the camping of Ponte Marmora on the second day we climbed the first part of Colle d'Esischie and then we turn right on the road to Rifugio Gardetta, from here we rode the gorgeous unpaved and scenic road of the Altopiano della Gardetta, one of the best road ever ridden in my life! Second night in Demonte and the third day was a half-day ride in Valle Stura to close the trip and reach the car. MUSIC: Death Cab For Cutie - The Sound of Settling
