Gold Coast local Jamaica Rose proves simplicity is sometimes the best recipe, using just a piece of paper, a slab of wood, a lead pencil and her splintered fingers to illustrate her unique and crazy take on reality. Jamaica discovered her artistic talent came from her father’s side when he revealed he had drew and painted the murals in her house of several Disney films such as Beauty and the Beast. Her grandmother and brother could also draw, however, never ventured down the same path as Jamaica in pursuing their career in art. For the past five years Jamaica has been illustrating, she has stuck to lead pencil sketches and shading, using the shadows to build upon her drawings. Recently, she has been experimenting with colours using oil pastels and acrylic paints. Along the side of her day job in retail, Jamaica studied at Tafe earning her self a diploma in graphic design nearly two years ago. Whilst the video above features largely the process of Jamaica’s hand drawn illustrations, she also uses the acquired skills from her diploma to enhance and assist her in gridding, drawing and colouring. Jamaica enjoys drawing on wooden skate decks as featured in the video, however, has also done some amazing surfboard illustrations I was unable to capture at the time. Most of her illustrations are based around real life pictures she has taken mixed with her crazy and innovative imagination. I filmed, watched and listened to Jamaica whilst she sketched a photo she had taken of a girl, something she personally loves to draw. She showed me around her house, which overall had an artistic vibe. She had bits and pieces of art showcased on every wall. Her art room looked as if she had tried to do a quick cleanup before I came, though there was still pencil shavings scattered across the floor with multiple unfinished pieces hidden behind others around the room. The overall feeling I had walking into Jamaica’s house inspired me. The creativity and thought that goes into her artwork made me wonder how she thinks of such ideas. She explained to me, that was a question she couldn’t answer and she just lets her imagination run wild. A future project she plans to work on consist of traveling overseas to draw the elderly in different villages around the world, illustrating their diverse cultures, stories, relationships and hardships. Jamaica said she is going to keep pushing herself to do more art, keep surprising herself and just see what comes out of it in the future.
