In light of the recent controversy and events in Cape Town concerning the statue of British imperialist, diamond mogul, and former prime minister of the Cape Colony in South Africa, Cecil John Rhodes, this documentary wishes to reveal the secrets of the inner-workings of the colonial system. What specifically prompted me to make this documentary, however, is the man who my grandfather was. Clifford Morojele was the first ever Rhodes Scholar from Lesotho and also one the first African recipients of this award. He was a fortunate man considering the political situation in Southern Africa in his time, having studied at Fort Hare University, University of the Witwatersrand and of course, Oxford University. My grandfather did not speak much to anyone about his work but I have found that there are interesting parallels that can be made between his occupational achievements and the will of Cecil John Rhodes - a blueprint for Rhodes' ambitious dream of a one world government.

Zoo (Volkerschau) is about two girl, one African, one German, preparing to see a live show featuring an exotic creature at the World's Fair in 1958. Same expectations, drastically different outcomes. One thing for sure; we don't know racism until it's taught to us. Zoo represents the depth of human capacity to find freedom in captivity. Zoo is a perspective on humanity. It explores the delicacy of innocence, the tightrope dynamics of mother-daughter relationships, the constant sacrifice and hard decisions mothers face with parenting, and the zest of a youthful dreamer compared to the resignation of dreams deferred for an older person who has simply run out of time to dream. Zoo celebrates life and freedom despite one’s circumstances and embraces the beauty of self-awareness and evolving, within the confines of one’s own personal zoo. Maya Angelou knew why the caged bird sings. And now, so will we. Produced by industry veteran Sabrina L Gray, this is filmmaker Monda Raquel Webb's calling card to the industry. The duo formed a production company last fall, Little Known Stories, to tell stories hidden in the crevices of History's pages. They are excavators, digging up truth and telling it through a visual medium in a purely organic way. Zoo (Volkerschau) is the first of many. The modern day war is a mediated war. No more hand to hand combat. No more face to face confrontation. No more looking at a mirror image of fear, doubt, and desperation. The modern day war is a monitor, a joystick, a button. Following orders of contradiction, stacked upon false narratives, with no end in site. And anything that does resemble an ending, is only a setup for a Hollywood like sequel or reboot. More explosions, more chase scenes, more movie star cameos. Less story-lines, less plot development, less meaningful substance. The modern day war is not mediated to everyone however. It is immediate to many. In a instant. And without warning. And it is utterly Terrifying. It is Terror. It is Terrorism.

This is the last film in the five-part series on Signs of Peace. This one covers the peculiar relationship between peace and empire, and shows how the goddess Pax, a very prominent symbol in peace action today, is in fact the goddess of pacification in the construction of empire, specifically the Roman Empire. Other empires, such as the British Empire, are discussed briefly as well. The film clocks in at about ten minutes, not quite within the five-minute format I wanted, but look at it as twice the incites :)

To mark the 70th anniversary of VE Day much has been made of the ‘liberation’ won by the allies, the so-called ‘freedom loving democracies’ against evil Germany. In this lecture arranged and filmed as part of WORLDwrite’s multi-media project on the life and works of C.L.R. James we learn this simple moral tale of good versus evil is not true. Despite the horrific loss of millions of lives in the war sacrificed ‘for freedom’ millions of people were not liberated but subject to the British colonial jackboot and in the USA brutal repression and racial segregation. Lecturer and author James Heartfield explains C.L.R James’ love of American civilisation yet opposition to the war and why he was not alone. C.L.R James provides a lesson for us all he suggests, that is we should not believe the official view or the radical view, just because it is often repeated doesn’t mean it’s true.
