      • On the Hill - The bumpy, bouncy, muddy, messy glory of Lincoln Creek Road

from On the Hill Added 425 1 0

Way up above Aspen on Independence Pass is a veritable high country paradise. Lincoln Creek Road is six miles of bumpy, muddy, bouncy, messy glory to those adventurists who enjoy a good backcountry dirt road. Careening up the Lincoln Creek drainage back towards Grizzly Reservoir and on back to the ghost town of Ruby, "The Linc" is just rocky enough to separate the trucks from the sedans. It's just rough enough and far enough into the backcountry that one can get into trouble if they aren't prepared for the vicious weather swings that can occur, even in the dead of summer, so if you go be sure to bring ample equipment to survive a long walk in a blizzard in case of an unexpected axle nuking. Aspen Times "dirt road correspondent" Corby Anderson and his segment producer, Hondo explore the length of Lincoln Creek Road by way of their trusty land cruiser on a recent summer afternoon.

Six miles down the rugged Lincoln Creek Road, and not so far from the ghost town of Ruby sparkle the green waters of Grizzly Reservoir, nestled in a gorgeous valley, surrounded by pine-studded peaks. The reservoir is stocked with a particularly spunky school of smallish rainbow trout that at times are so active chasing bugs that they seem to be dancing on the water, and sure are fun to pursue with a fly rod. Aspen Times "dirt road correspondent" Corby Anderson takes you on a quick fishin' mission to check out the "flying rainbows" of Grizzly Reservoir
