After months of Stand Up Paddling in Brazil I am officially hooked. Unfortunately my board had to stay in Brazil, so I brought a new inflatable SUP from the Red Paddle Co here in the UK. Here's a little tongue in cheek footage from a recent session on the River Stort next to my apartment here in Hertfordshire. No waves (and plenty of weed), but still fun to get out and soak up the sun! Thanks to Lukey for shooting the footage from the bank.

When it comes to inflatable Stand Up Paddle Boards (SUPs) many people wonder how the durability of the fragile looking boards will be. The manufacturers say it is nearly impossible to destroy these boards. So we took a Naish One inflatable and tried it out. This is no scientific test but we gave the board a pretty hard time and were super impressed about how much it can take without breaking.

Late last year we decided to tackle a Himalayan River on Standup paddle boards. But, which river? Wikipedia, the Ganesh of the west, informs us that The Karnali is Nepal’s longest and largest river. It is rated one of the top ten multi-day river trips in the world combining big rapids, beautiful scenery and great camping. It seemed like the ideal choice. The length of the journey 7- 8 days was just right. Not too long, not too short. So in November 2012, we took our C4 waterman iSUPs to Nepal! The Karnali offered more experienced paddlers like Guy the challenge of big bouncy grade 3-4 rapids with large surfing waves. For me as a less experienced river paddler (don't leave the ocean much), I enjoyed the momentum generated from the dropping gradient over long wave trains and, on the formidable rapids was able to opt for a “chicken shoot” or a short portage. It was the most amazing fun. As you'll see from this short clip, there is no space for ego in white-water SUP, whoever are you, you head into a Class 3-4 rapid knowing that more than likely you aren’t going to make it standing up. The best strategy is to pick a line that gives you the best opportunity to swim out safely. There is no shame in swimming its part of the game. And what a funny game it is. white-water SUP doesn't make for the best viewing but it sure is a barrel of laughs.

From October 12-13th, the inaugural Naish N1SCO World Championships occurred at Lake Las Vegas in Henderson, Nevada with paddlers from over 9 different nations participating. Contestants hailed from Slovenia, Switzerland, South Africa, France, and Japan (just to name a few) to battle it out, race by race, using the Naish ONE Inflatable SUP boards for a chance to call themselves the 2013 N1SCO World Champion. The vibes were amazing and participants couldn’t stop raving about how much fun they had while racing and helping grow the sport of SUP. Naish’s “ONE Design” SUP race events are helping fill the vital gap between recreational paddling and hi-end racing, attracting paddlers who aren’t “hardcore” racers, showing them a fair playing field where what board you use doesn’t influence your overall finish. Learn more at www.n1sco.com. Sit back and enjoy this video filled with highlights & recaps from the Naish N1SCO World Championships at Lake Las Vegas. We’ll see you on the water next year!
