'Droned for Grapevines' is one of the five finalists in the Westpac Innovation Challenge for Agribusiness. Currently, virus detection for viticulture is a lab-based process costing $100 per grapevine. Our technology uses a combination of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs, also called drones) , optical instruments and biochemistry to allow early detection of virus infections of individual grapevines at scales of square kilometres in order to prevent yield loss and disease spread. 'Drones for Grapevines' consists of an interdisciplinary team of researchers from agriculture, environmental, and spatial disciplines working together on the Waite Campus of Adelaide University. Recent advancements in fields are allowing us to combines our state-of-the-art knowledge of biochemical conditions in plant leaves, how viruses alter these and how this can be optically sensed to build a detection system for virus infected grapevines that is much faster and more effective. With the decreasing size and cost of drones and their increased use in land management, the timing is perfect to take our innovative solution to market.

          • NUST for IASP 2017 World Congress to Pakistan!

            03:45

            from Wille Eerola Added 107 0 0

NUST, the leading university in Pakistan and one of the top universities in the whole Asia, and their National Science and Technology Park , is one of the two contenders for hosting the IASP World Conference in 2017. The members of the IASP, International Association of Science Parks, will vote for the host of the World Congress 2017 of IASP in Beijing in September 2015. It is a fact known to many global companies working in Pakistan that its innovation space market is virtually a virgin land with a potential value of billions of dollars. However, Pakistan’s status as one of the most promising emerging markets in Asia remains understated till date. But this may change. As the locus of global business shifts from the metropolises of the West to the cities of the East, the country’s socio-economic, demographic and S&T strengths make it a veritable treasure trove for global and regional firms operating in electronics, healthcare, luxury goods, basic commodities, high-technology and knowledge-intensive products. With a population of approximately 200 million, Pakistan is currently passing through a demographic youth bulge with around sixty percent of its population under thirty. These teeming millions are not only in the prime of their lives but also are curious and tech-savvy waiting to make the most of the mobile and internet revolutions that, like the rest of the developing world, have also impacted Pakistan in the last decade. By 2020, the country shall be home to at least 4, or maybe more, megacities having a population of more than ten million together with scores of medium-sized cities with population varying between two hundred thousand and ten million. With the highest regional urbanization rate of more than 36 percent, Pakistan is witnessing the fastest growth in the numbers of city dwellers in South Asia. Having experienced a meteoric growth in its higher education sector of more than 350 percent between 2003 and 2012, the country is well-poised to experience the explosive growth of knowledge-based industries powered by a reasonably strong public R&D base and a burgeoning young urban educated middle class. All this translates into big-sized business and profit opportunities which will only be exploited by those companies that make the smart decision of investing and operating in the country well before the first quarter of the twenty-first century ends. Take a look at the NUST's promotion video. You might be suprised what Pakistan and NUST is all about. Knowing the wonderful management and staff members personally, I can assure you that NUST would be the perfect host for the IASP 2017. Pakistan suffers too much of the bad image and there is so much happening in technology, innovation, R&D and education in Pakistan. I believe that Pakistan and NUST / NSTP really deserves this window of opportunity to showcase the capacity, knowledge and passion of its young, dynamic, smart and educated new generation. I wish good luck for voting and if you are a decision maker within any full IASP member organisation I would encourage you to vote for Pakistan in September. My personal guarantee stands for NUST's staff members and students: they will make the IASP World Congress the best one ever seen before! All business friends of mine in Scandinavia, Europe and US: let's make it happen for NUST and Pakistan now! Please go to NUST's web site for more information: http://nust.edu.pk

                • RT-100 gene therapy for congestive heart failure: How it works

                  03:30

                  from Renova Therapeutics Added 32 0 0

The company’s lead product, RT-100 for congestive heart failure (CHF), is a first-in-class, single-dose treatment designed to safely improve heart function. More than a decade of intensive research shows that RT-100 has the potential to substantially benefit ailing hearts without the well-known drawbacks of many current CHF therapies. Our lead scientist, Dr. H. Kirk Hammond, discovered that AC6 (adenylyl cyclase type 6) was down-regulated in hearts of CHF sufferers. AC6 is a protein found in cardiac muscle cells that has many important roles in regulating heart function. Dr. Hammond, therefore, developed a gene therapy designed to up-regulate AC6 content and restore heart function. This is the basis for RT-100.
