A Secret Shovelling Mission Back in 1923 a man named Björn Andrésson gathered some of his friends from the local youth association to construct a pool, Seljavallalaug. It’s one of Iceland’s oldest swimming pools and you enter at your own risk. Only cleaned once a year, it’s filled with green goo most of the time but hey, entrance is free! After the Eyjafjallajökull Volcano eruption, the pool was filled with ashes. It was no biggie. A group of volunteers simply gathered and cleaned it up with shovels. Swimming pool solidarity. That’s the spirit. If you want to see what a great job they did, just head out there. You probably won’t need a shovel, but you never know. - See more at: http://www.inspiredbyiceland.com/secrets/map/#secret247 Music by Pascal Pinon

Secret Graves and Secret Caves Hjörleifshöfði (Hjörleifur’s Headland) is named after Iceland’s first settler Ingólfur Arnarson’s foster-brother. Ingólfur was out of luck and was killed by his slaves within a year from settling down. His grave lies on top of the headland. The promontory was actually once an island, but during the period of settlement became attached to the mainland while Kerlingarfjörður (Old Woman’s Fjord), ran along it. In Hjörleifshöfði’s southern side there is a cave where upon entry you have to sing a certain song. That’s just they way they do things in this cave. - See more at: http://www.inspiredbyiceland.com/secrets/map/#secret251 Music by Pascal Pinon

A Secret Split Have a problem with boundaries? Then you’re in the wrong place. Sorry. Iceland lies on the Mid Atlantic Ridge and is being split by the movements of the North American Plate and the Eurasian Plate. When you drive from Keflavik airport to Reykjavik you go along the edge of the North American plate where it meets the European plate. In Thingvellir valley, the site of Iceland’s first parliament, you can see both sides of the plate boundary in one sweeping panorama. In one place you can get even closer than you ever dreamed possible. - See more at: http://www.inspiredbyiceland.com/secrets/map/#secret296 Music by Pascal Pinon

If you stumble upon one of those cozy fellas make 100% sure it’s made for bathing and then dive in. Some of them are boiling hot but other ones have the perfect temperature to bathe in. A Secret Parkland Neskaupstaður (sometimes called Little-Moscow of Iceland, don’t ask me why) belongs to the municipal of Fjarðarbyggð (Inhabited Area of the Fjords). It is one of Iceland’s longest communities. Longest? Yes, you heard me. It only reaches around 100 meters up the hill while spanning over 6 kilometers of shoreline. Testicle-Aviation is the name of an annual music festival held in Neskaupstaður. What a great name for a music festival, right? - See more at: http://www.inspiredbyiceland.com/secrets/map/#secret253 Music by Pascal Pinon

A Secret Place to Say Hi Djúpivogur is a little town located in the eastern Iceland peninsula. Find yourself visiting historical buildings built over 200 years ago, all remarkably well kept and some in original condition. A visit to the Elf’s Church or a boat ride over to Iceland’s largest island, Papey Island where you are able to shake wings with thousands of seabirds is well worth your while, especially if you like seals. .You will see seals just sitting on rocks (really, doesn’t sound that exciting but it really is kind of cool). Say hi for me. - See more at: http://www.inspiredbyiceland.com/secrets/map/#secret255 Music by Pascal Pinon

Now we come together every year for a festival that celebrates this welcome addition to our livelihood. You’re invited. And no matter whether you’re here during our festival or in the darker months, we will welcome you. And serve you lobster.
