    • Syria | Tammam Azzam

      from Ayyam Gallery Added 1,381 3 0

Solo exhibition of new works by Syrian artist Tammam Azzam at Ayyam Gallery Al Quoz - Dubai Displaced Syrians feel a deep connection and sadness with the events unfolding in their country. As each day brings word of another friend or family member perishing, they feel silenced and immobile, unable to take any action, to cause any formidable change or provide assistance. 'Syria', Tammam Azzam’s solo exhibition of new digital and installation art on show from 10 November until the 31 December at Ayyam Art Center, is his way of reaching out, of sounding his pain and protest and shedding light on the matter. Exhibited exactly one year from the start of the series and curated by acclaimed Syrian artist Safwan Dahoul, these works extend a political commentary on the upheavals in their homeland that have led to the Syrian Uprising and the subsequent destruction and violence. Utilizing the entirety of the exhibition space in the vast Ayyam Art Center, this expansive show will display a separate series in each room. In the main hall, Azzam’s digital artworks will feature prominently. Highly coveted for their originality and poignancy, each work coincides with a particular event of the Uprising, depicting a variety of fractured and wounded maps of Syria, fallen chess pawns and other symbols reconfigured in clever, yet powerful reflections of the turmoil facing his countrymen. Digital artworks representing a location the Syrian Uprising has affected will be exhibited in the second room. Each bearing ‘In the revolution’ followed by the name of the area that witnessed the revolution, these retro, over-saturated works present an overall sentiment of longing, echoing to a distant past which no longer exists amidst the present turmoil. Azzam’s 'Syrian Museum' series incorporates iconic subjects from the greatest European masters such as da Vinci, Matisse, Goya and Picasso, paralleling the greatest achievements of humanity with the destruction it is also capable of inflicting. Born in the Syrian capital in 1980, Tammam Azzam graduated from the Faculty of Fine Arts in Damascus with a concentration in Oil Painting and subsequently obtained a Fine Arts Certificate in 2001 from Darat al Funun’s Al Kharif Academy, an esteemed artist workshop series led by Syrian master, Marwan Kassab Bashi. Since joining the Shabab Ayyam Young Artists Programme in 2008, he has been featured in several significant events including the group show, 'Stories from the Levant', Scope Art Fair, Basel, in 2009, and Art Miami 2010, and has held solo exhibitions at Ayyam Gallery, Damascus in 2010 and Dubai in 2011.

      • 04 PinkSlipsStolen Dec. 2012

        from Cai Xi Added 24 0 0

This textile, installation and video art piece (without audio) is part of my MFA studio work for Vermont College of Fine Arts. The reference to the job-type of 'pink slips' is intentional, and continues a theme seen in other performance art/installation pieces such as is documented in 'Document Shredding' (vimeo.com/44407068) and 'Onion Cutting' (vimeo.com/44400347). Other videos in the 'pink slip' art project including documenting the wrapping of buildings with repeated paper pink slips as seen in vimeo.com/47584371 and vimeo.com/46484699. Pink Slips Flying was a temporary installation and wind sculpture, following in the same vein as 'Avenue As River' (vimeo.com/45613108), 'Guilford Fabric Art' (vimeo.com/45126682), 'Fabric Art and Cooking Project' (vimeo.com/43436082), and 'SkyWindEarthFlow 2011' (vimeo.com/35176523). All of these efforts are part of (or lead into) the larger project started by Cai in 2012, Art=WorkStrengthenNourish. This is the third installation video on Pink Slippers, the first two released in the past two months at vimeo.com/52202213 and vimeo.com/54745724. There were four pink slips sewn and secured outside by me, three on the rhododendron and one from the signage. [The installation is on the major east-west route through southern Vermont.] One morning, they were gone, overnight. To document their loss, I put together an image of the four slips the way they were before the disappearance. I took photos of the outside afterwards with the slips gone. Then, I made another image to show the position of the missing slips by filling in the shape of the slips as only white. Fortunately I had sewn eight slips altogether at the start. The other four were on display in the gallery vestibule. To replace the four stolen slips, I took the other four from inside and put them outside. Where the slips had been displayed I made an outline with archival tape on the wall, like the chalk outlines one sees on the street and sidewalk at a crime scene. As soon as I saw the first four slips were stolen, I realized that this theft must be part of the Pink Slip Project, one of the activities of the ongoing 'performance.'

        • Projection Installation for NYE 2013 @ Gonpachi with Blacklist Tokyo

          from Hfour Added 140 1 0

I had the pleasure set up a projection installation at the famous Gonpachi restaurant in Tokyo. Gonpachi is the restaurant that inspired Quentin Tarantino's iconic fight scene in Kill Bill. I had the idea to project onto umbrellas for an event, and this venue was an ideal location for it. Thank-you to Blacklist Tokyo for inviting me to perform, and to Michael Wilkins for the music used in this video. Projected media content created by Hfour, using copyright expired classical Japanese paintings. Fair use. Message me if you're interested in getting the .aep and .psd files for your own uses.

                      from Arjen Boerstra Added 70 0 0

...In the darkened space the visitor can see all kinds and facets of 'water'. There is a large video projection on the wall of prerecordings at the bottom of a ditch. The eye of the camera fixes both the life in a ditch, and the movements of a rower who shows off against the swindling sky above the water. In the world of Boerstra you come close to mysterious views in which a mix of memories, fantasy and reality take place. In another space a huge water basin is built, completed with fish and plants. The lights on the water turn the site in a mysterious environment, just as the pictures on the wall of the rower, made from the bottom of the ditch. There is a rowing skiff in the water with a 12 year old boy in it. The boat has a window in the floor as a result of which you can look in the water. A videocamera hangs above it and fixes the movements of the water and the boat. Arjen Boerstra uses images and ideas everyone knows in his life. He transforms them into other realities which are fascinating and playful, where litterally all sides are illuminated... www.arjenboerstra.nl
