Update: check the 2.0 version! http://vimeo.com/34824490 A quick installation prototype Emily and I hooked up with the libfreenect Kinect drivers and ofxKinect. The system is doing skeleton tracking on the arm and determining where the shoulder, elbow, and wrist is, using it to control the movement and posture of the giant funky bird! Speed project - made in a day using openFrameworks and libFreenect. Concept and Production by Design I/O Emily Gobeille - Theo Watson http://design-io.com 3D depth camera for arm tracking, courtesy of Microsoft and the open source / diy community :) If you're interested in making projects with the Kinect and openFrameworks check out the addon as it progresses on the OF forums. http://openframeworks.cc/forum/viewtopic.php?p=24948#p24948 Also keep an eye on the libfreenect GitHub for latest updates to the driver - https://github.com/OpenKinect/libfreenect/

So glad to be able to share this! We, and by we I mean http://isthis.gd, built a MIDI orchestra for Grey London and Brother from old computer junk. Photocopiers, scanners, fax machines, printers, hard drives, modems and the like. We thought it'd be most fun to do it for real. We were really inspired by Tristram Cary, James Houston, BD594 and other radical tinkerers. Making cold stuff warm is fun. We found loads of old machines destined for landfill, took them to bits and reverse engineered them to make noises that we could control via MIDI. Badman Will Cohen made an arrangement of Bob Dylan's 'The Times They Are A-Changin' but the orchestra can play any MIDI arrangement, or indeed be performed live. Maximum respect to Neil Mendoza, Marek Bereza, Will Cohen, Stefan Dzisiewski-Smith, Justin Pentecost, Mike Harrison, Mat Holloway, Jason Oakley and all at Partizan, Liat Wassershtrom, Ben Joffe, Tim Leask, Jack Ellis, Ozzie Pullin. Awesome cinematography by Denzil Armour-Brown and Daniel Lowe. Tight edit by Ross Hallard. Post and psychotherapy by Sheldon Gardner and www.time-based-arts.com

This is the updated 2.0 version of our Kinect Interactive Puppet prototype ( http://vimeo.com/16985224 ). Puppet Parade is an interactive installation that allows children to use their arms to puppeteer larger than life creatures projected on the wall in front of them. Children can also step in to the environment and interact with the puppets directly, petting them or making food for them to eat. This dual interactive setup allows children to perform alongside the puppets, blurring the line between the 'audience' and the puppeteers and creating an endlessly playful dialogue between the children in the space and the children puppeteering the creatures. Puppet Parade premiered at the 2011 Cinekid festival in Amsterdam. Puppet Parade is made with openFrameworks and the ofxKinect addon. www.archifon.org Archifon is a large interactive virtual musical instrument originally made for the Olomouc Baroque de-baptized chapel. Architectonical objects are re-interpreted by virtual layer via projection and sound. This is made possible by the mapping of the virtual surface of the chapel's interior. Up to ten visitors at a time can interact with Archifon by using the laser pointers. Installation by Harald Haraldsson and Super Nature Design Produced by Wonwei and Super Nature Design More info at http://haraldharaldsson.com -- In 1666, Sir Isaac Newton conducted a famous experiment that has been widely considered as a landmark discovery in the study of optics and color theory. Inspired by this discovery, PRISMA 1666 is an interactive light installation consisting of 15 triangular crystal blocks distributed randomly on a clean white surface. The projection of colorful graphics is refracted and dispersed by these crystal blocks, creating a fascinating visual experience and ambiance. The installation enables interaction with the projected colors, angles, and shapes through a touch interface, creating an opportunity to experiment with these elements like Isaac Newton did so many years before us. The installation is a collaboration between Harald Haraldsson and Shanghai-based design studio Super Nature Design. It was first exhibited at the 2011 International Science and Art Exhibition in Shanghai where it received the Best Creative Design Award.

http://www.kimchiandchips.com/littree.php A small potted tree has a perpetual conversation with people. Through the use of video projection, a tree is augmented in a non-invasive way, enabling the presentation of volumetric light patterns using itʼs own leaves as voxels (3D pixels). The tree invites viewers with a choreographed cloud of light that can respond visitors motion. As visitors approach, they can explore the immediate and cryptic nature of this reaction. The tree can form gestures in this way, and can in turn detect the gestures of its visitors. By applying a superficial layer of immediate interaction to the tree, can people better appreciate the long term invisible interaction that they share with it? Music by Trentemøller

http://mimicry.monobanda.nl The world of Mimicry is a playful world. Maybe it is best described as a schoolyard, or a digital sandbox. Four players roll around and chase each other in a digital world. They push each other off the tops of mountains and paint in the sand. But there's a twist. The digital landscape also exists in real life. There's an actual sandbox which players can use to shape the virtual world in real-time. If you pay attention you can see tiny virtual characters roll around in the sandbox. Build obstacles for them, or create a racetrack. This is a game that initiates playful connections between people from different worlds. One world controlled by buttons on a gamepad, the other by making mountains of sand. Mimicry is the ultimate sandbox game.
