Untitled Sock Project is an artistic installation developed during November 2010 as part of the Mediamatic Dev Camp in Amsterdam. By blowing into straws, visitors contribute to the creation of a knitted sock. Depending on how hard they blow and which straw they blow into, the sock will be knit faster and the thread will be colored with different pigments. The result will be a collaboratively knit sock with a unique color pattern. Music by: Williamson Project by: Luís Brandão Fábio Costa Sean Follmer Pol Pla

Interactive robot orchestra more info and images - http://vtol.cc/filter/works/nayral-ro The orchestra consists of 12 robotic manipulators of various designs, each of which is equipped with a sound-transmitting speaker. The manipulators, combined together, form a single multi-channel electronic sound orchestra. Due to constant displacement speakers in space, changing direction of the sound and the algorithms for generating compositions, the orchestra creates a dynamic soundscape. In order to interact with the orchestra, controller Leap Motion is used, that allows to control robots and sound by simple hands gestures in the air - similarly to conducting an orchestra. The project is based on the idea of a combination of modern music, computer, interactive and robotic concepts and approaches for the creation of works of art. In many ways, it is inspired by well-known works that were presented in the recent past, such as Pendulum Choir (2011) and Mendelssohn Effektorium (2013). However, Nayral Ro is different from these projects in many ways. Its algorithmic system, in which sound and musical composition are being produced, is real time, and the acoustic environment also changes simultaneously with the process of creating the musical piece. Also, the whole process is completely subordinated by the "conductor", so this a role is similar to such of a composer, performer and operator at the same time. Creation of more sophisticated versions, more subtly revealing the potential of Leap Motion for tuning to the movement and changes in sound, is being planned for the future development. video by Nikolai Zheludovich

"Mirrors Mirror", 2008 768 polished steel tiles, motors, control electronics, video camera, color lighting 88 x 66 x 6" / 223.5 x 167.6 x 15.2 cm edition of 6 "Mirrors Mirror" is a mechanical sculpture and custom lighting environment that organizes 768 square reflective pixels along a picture plane. In this piece an overall rectangular composition shows a silhouette of each viewer, while each individual square chrome unit tilts to deflect the person's literal reflection. Investigating order versus chaos, and the inner workings human visual perception, "Mirrors Mirror" also explores the borderlines between digital and analog worlds, or virtual and physical experience. 'The Machine to Be Another' is an embodiment system designed to address the relation between identity and empathy. The project merges performances with protocols of neuroscience experiments, in order to offer users an immersive experience of seeing themselves in the body of another person. This video reports the methods and partial results of the interdisciplinary qualitative investigation that we are making on low budget approach to stimulate empathy through embodied interaction between individuals.

Very Nervous System was the third generation of interactive sound installations which I have created. In these systems, I use video cameras, image processors, computers, synthesizers and a sound system to create a space in which the movements of one's body create sound and/or music. It has been primarily presented as an installation in galleries but has also been installed in public outdoor spaces, and has been used in a number of performances. I created the work for many reasons, but perhaps the most pervasive reason was a simple impulse towards contrariness. The computer as a medium is strongly biased. And so my impulse while using the computer was to work solidly against these biases. Because the computer is purely logical, the language of interaction should strive to be intuitive. Because the computer removes you from your body, the body should be strongly engaged. Because the computer's activity takes place on the tiny playing fields of integrated circuits, the encounter with the computer should take place in human-scaled physical space. Because the computer is objective and disinterested, the experience should be intimate.

The interactive art/design project Talking Doors studied the door’s poetic power of organising and provoking various psychological, conceptual, and social events in public space. The selected unique door-related and door-mediated events were exaggerated, deformed and deconstructed in five interactive installations located in the public spaces of central Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania – namely, in the doors of different important public buildings. The project aimed at becoming an analytical door 'slaughterhouse' and critical playground. http://www.julijonasurbonas.lt/
