“When the Lights Up” is a 360 degree installation art piece, constructed with 265 LED lights. Adapting Neon Light to be the symbol of the hustling and bustling city, light is the main medium to demonstrate a visual illusion that presents both time and words message at the same time. “When the lights up” is actually an electric clock that hides the actual time in the Neon Lights. The operation of the Neon Lights are controlled by computer programming. Spectators needs to walk around the clock in 360 degree to find a specific location and perspective so that they can see the hidden numbers that shows time. The idea of the whole art work is about time management. Behind the prosperity of the city, people tend to neglect the quick passage of time. Fast paces of life numb people and make them forget how to use time properly to live the lives meaningfully. A life that is truly desirable for them. During the search of time by locating the right position, we hope that the participants will understand that time is a relative and subjective concept. Time and the meaning of time need also to be searched. Everyone possesses the same passage speed of time, but the usage of time is dependent on every individual, and thus the meaning of time to every individual are different. What is important is how to use this moment properly as we wish and make the present meaningful. Spectators may not able to find the right location for every time. Missing this one minute teach us to live this moment properly and treasure the next moment. In this way, we are the master of our time and the creator of the meanings of time. • Little Universe

                  01:25

                  from Saman Tehrani / Added

The little universe of poetic objects is there, revolving around itself, no matter whether or not you are observing or interfering with it. Colorful the objects are; and meanwhile they are not mindless clouds of stardust. Each object has its own temperament—it has a tendency to get close to someone, while being repulsive to another. Therefore, under the influence from the exterior, the little universe will reveal its rich dynamics. This interactive installation is designed to bring about a serene and spiritual atmosphere. It has an intimate physical form, so that the audience will feel welcomed to put their hands on it. However, without heavy intervention, the audience can still enjoy the poetic dialogue among the objects by watching, listening and meditating. The little universe installation is built upon project mapping techniques. The system contains a flat surface as the cosmic background, and foam balls with implanted infrared LEDs as the poetic objects. The infrared light from the objects is captured by a Kinect motion sensor, and analyzed by an openFrameworks application in order to locate the objects. Based on the position of the objects and their relationships, a particle system is updated and rendered by the code. The image is then processed by MadMapper before being sent to the projector, which has been calibrated so that the projection will be aligned with the physical objects. Control messages are sent from the openFrameworks app to Ableton Live via the Open Sound Control protocol, so that Live can generate the ambient music and sound effects. (Project team: Weili Shi, Miri Park, Saman Tehrani)
