On the fourth day of the "Happiness is Here and Now" Retreat at the YMCA of Hong Kong on Sunday, November 7th, 2010, Thay speaks on the teaching of being free from a separate self. "You are a flower in the garden of humanity. You are made of non-you elements. You are made of father, mother, ancestors, food, education. If you remove all these non-you elements, there is no you left. So when you look into the lotus and see the mud, you know that the mud is essential for the lotus to be. So you have no further discrimination against the mud. This insight is so crucial for us to be happy, because if you see things in a dualistic way there will always be discrimination, separation, violence and fear."

"Bloom" is inspired by Vietnamese Buddhist Zen master, Thich Nhat Hanh who writes, "As thin as this sheet of paper is, it contains everything in the universe in it." I began exploring the interconnectedness of my environment to a sheet of paper by filming through a sheet of semi-transparent paper and shooting with a slow shutter speed. No images in this film were digitally altered in editing. They appear exactly as I shot them. I like to say that I didn't make "Bloom". I discovered it by shifting my own, heavily conditioned, and sometimes dull perspective and viewing my everyday surroundings with openness and the attitude of someone who had, for instance, never seen grass before. In Bloom, I’m exploring changing perspectives and the infinite source of possibilities hidden within each moment.

Composed by Radiohead. Performed by The Interbeings - a virtual band consisting of Joe Lamattina on drums, Michael (henceforth Mikhail) Pessah on bass, and me on guitars and vocals. Don't forget Lisa Lamattina, who did over-the-counter percussion and videography of Joe. The visual style of this cover video is informed by Thich Nhat Hanh's teaching that all things contain all other things. So I am you and we are both that lamp. Please enjoy while breathing in and breathing out. More credits: I shot my sections and those featuring Mikhail, and I edited it all together. Mikhail mastered the mixed audio. Thank you, virtual bandmates; that was fun. And thank you, whoever you are, for checking it out. More goodness is waiting for you at burkepost.com.
