Ira Glass talks about creative beginners. The original kinetic typography is made by David Shiyang Liu, I just added the music (Yann Tiersen) and displayed the typography on the wall of Kempertrautmann Berlin. Why? Because it's an agency that believes in young talent and relentlessly encourages beginner creatives to stay focused, keep trying and aim for the sky.

Recent Portraits documents the interviews for a series of painted portraits by Ken Aptekar. In advance of his 2010 solo exhibition at Graham Gallery in NYC, Aptekar interviewed the subjects of his portraits for the show. Instead of how the people looked, these portraits show how they looked....at paintings. In museums, mostly, but also in the private collection of two of Aptekar's "sitters." Using their candid responses, Aptekar interpreted the paintings they looked at to come up with his own versions, and wrote short texts based on the videotaped interviews. The texts were sandblasted onto glass that was then bolted over painted panels. Together the text and image constitute a new kind of portrait. The paintings that resulted from these interviews can be found here: http://repainterdiaries.com/2010/06/17/recent-portraits-revealed/

A story about the beginnings of the economic collapse told in a way that makes a complex story accessible to a wide radio and web audience. Ahead of many journalists, reporters Alex Blumberg and Adam Davidson gave an outstanding and occasionally irreverent explanation about the current financial crisis in April 2008, months before the global economy began to unravel. Through terrific storytelling and economic insight, the reporters demystify the subprime mortgage meltdown using personal stories to explain terms such as derivatives, tranches, short selling and credit swaps. Blumberg and Davidson found excellent characters to bring the economic forces to life; a shaky mortgage holder, a mortgage bundler, a Wall Street banker, and others. The program was the first collaboration between National Public Radio’s news division and This American Life produced by Chicago Public Radio. The podcast of the story has been downloaded over 500,000 times. Alex Blumberg, Adam Davidson, reporters and producers; Les Cook, editor; Ira Glass, Ellen Weiss, executive producers View "The Giant Pool of Money" here: http://qtstreaming.jrn.columbia.edu/dupont/2009/giantpoolmoney.mov
