During the weeks of April 14 and 21, Salaam Shalom: Report on Palestine/Israel will air two documentaries that feature Israeli Jewish perspectives on resistance to Zionist occupation, ethnic cleansing, militarism and colonization. The first was given in 2008 on the subject of the Palestinian Nakba of 1948 and its meaning today by Israeli historian Ilan Pappe. The second, a talk by Sahar Vardi, a 24-year old woman who was imprisoned by the Israeli military for refusing conscription when she was 18. This edition will also air two short videos, one by the Never Before Campaign honoring and mobilizing resistance to Israel’s occupation and war crimes; the other by a group of artists in Finland called "SodaScream: Bubble Trouble," which employs satire to expose illegal business practices in the West Bank by the Israeli company SodaStream. Special thanks to Danny Weiss, our technical producer, and Jamie Brooks, VTJP.org webmaster.

This episode of Salaam Shalom: Report on Palestine Israel airs Jon Pullman's searing documentary "Children in Chains," which documents the arrest, incarceration and cruel treatment, including torture, of Palestinian children at the hands of Israel's military justice and prison system. Between 2000 and 2011 alone, 7,500 Palestinian children were arrested, detained or imprisoned by Israel's occupation regime. The second half of our program will focus on the growing BDS movement, with a report on Israeli Apartheid Week worldwide, which is taking place in February and March, a performance piece by Palestinian-American poet Remi Kanazi, and a report from the Real News Network on the Israeli government's growing unease at the success of BDS and its efforts to slander and suppress it. Special thanks to Danny Weiss, co-producer and technical director, and Jamie Brooks, VTJP.org webmaster.

This edition of Salaam Shalom: Report on Palestine/Israel highlights the racism, violence and discrimination inherent in the Jewish settler movement, as documented in Julia Bacha's powerful film, "My Neighborhood." The film also demonstrates the power of nonviolent resistance and Jewish-Arab solidarity as Palestinians in East Jerusalem and Israeli Jews come together to stop the forced evictions of Palestinians by Jewish settlers in Sheik Jarrah. Julia Bacha's 2011 TED talk on Palestinian nonviolent resistance and the silence of the media on that nature and scope of that resistance is also featured on this program. The balance of the show features an interview with Israeli scholars Adi Ophir and Ariella Azoulay about their brilliant new book, "The One-State Condition: Occupation and Democracy in Israel/Palestine," a performance by Jasiri X of his song "Checkpoint," and a tribute to the Palestinian people produced by the Never Before Campaign, a collective of professionals and activists based in Beirut. Special thanks to Danny Weiss, co-producer and technical engineer, and Jamie Brooks, VTJP.org webmaster.

This edition of Salaam Shalom: Report on Palestine/Israel will air the award-winning, Swedish documentary “Israel vs. Israel.”  It portrays four Israelis who are resisting their country’s military occupation of and settler-colonial regime in the Palestinian territories: Jonathan Pollak from Anarchists Against the Wall, Yehuda Shaul from Breaking the Silence, Ronny Perlmann from Machsom Watch and Arik Ascherman from Rabbis for Human Rights.  We will also feature a brilliant satiric sketch that aired on BBC.  It features actors impersonating employees of the Israeli Embassy in Great Britain, and who tell unwitting shop owners that their property will be confiscated to make way for the Embassy’s expansion.  They employ—and mock—the absurd religious rationales for Israeli settlements and expose the political exploitation of the charge of “anti-Semitism.”  This program will close by noting the passing of Sr. Miriam Ward, one of the founding members of Vermonters For A Just Peace in Palestine/Israel.  Special thanks to Danny Weiss, co-producer and technical director, and Jamie Brooks, VTJP webmaster. This edition of Salaam Shalom: Report on Palestine/Israel features journalist and author Max Blumenthal, speaking at a December 4 event hosted by the New America Foundation, one of the most influential think tanks in Washington, D.C. Blumenthal’s remarks were based on his latest book, Goliath: Life and Loathing in Greater Israel, which presents an unflinching portrait of an Israeli society dedicated to the ongoing occupation, ethnic cleansing and colonization of Palestine. Blumenthal also discusses the rise of racist and authoritarian right-wing parties in Israel. The New America Foundation was harshly criticized by some pro-Israel individuals for inviting Blumenthal to speak. VTJP commends the Foundation for opening its doors to this brave journalist, and, by doing so, broadening the scope of political discussion about Israel’s racist policies and crimes. Special thanks to Danny Weiss, our technical producer, and Jamie Brooks, VTJP webmaster (www.vtjp.org).

This edition of Salaam Shalom: Report on Palestine/Israel will air two segments of an extended interview with Max Blumenthal by Paul Jay of the Real News Network. Blumenthal, an independent journalist and writer, shares insights with Jay from his new and controversial book "Goliath: Life and Loathing in Greater Israel," which documents the scope and virulence of anti-Arab racism, xenophobia and right-wing, authoritarian political movements in Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories. We will also air a documentary by the Alternative Information Center in Jerusalem on Israeli occupation policies toward the Palestinian population of East Jerusalem, which lends credence to Blumenthal's conclusions about racism and ethnic cleansing engineered by the Zionist state. And we will feature two videotaped testimonies of former Israeli soldiers discussing their service in Occupied Palestine and the crisis of conscience that led each to speak out against the occupation. Their testimonies were recorded by Breaking the Silence. Special thanks to Danny Weiss, our technical producer, and Jamie Brooks, VTJP webmaster.

This edition of Salaam Shalom: Report on Palestine/Israel examines Zionist racism, violence and discrimination on both sides of the “Green Line” in Israel-Palestine. From Israeli settlers and soldiers in the West Bank solidifying Israel’s control over Palestinian land and water resources to mob violence and indefinite incarceration of African refugees and migrant workers inside Israel proper, this program features graphic reports that underscore the contradiction between universal human rights and democratic ideals and the preservation of a racially exclusive Jewish state. Particularly disturbing is a video documentary by David Sheen and Max Blumenthal on Israel’s persecution and detention of thousands of sub-Saharan Africans fleeing persecution, and another by the Real News Network on the rise of a new generation of Jewish racists, in the halls of power and on the street, who are determined to preserve the state’s profound structural inequality, especially in respect to land and economic development policies, that blatantly favors the Jewish community. Finally, the program features an interview with Rania Masri, an Arab-American human rights activist and environmental scientist, where she discusses the one-state solution, the prospects for the emergence of a new Palestinian leadership, and the historic and ongoing crimes committed by Israel against Palestinians. Special thanks to Danny Weiss, our technical producer, and Jamie Brooks, VTJP webmaster. Show #231
