The smoke is clearing…we have 3 shopping days left until Christmas….and I am starting to circle up and study all my Italian wines in stock. I stumbled across a new line of wines that I grabbed just before Thanksgiving that were REALLY exciting…Then completely forgot that I bought them!! Have you ever bought a wine before and stuck it in your wine fridge or wine rack and then forgot that you bought it or why you bought it? That’s what I did (Oops) I know WHY I bought them. It’s because this is an exciting new project from the folks at FONTANAFREDDA and The Wine Advocate’s Antonio Galloni was glowing over what tremendous value they represent… “…This is another impressive set of wines from Mirafiore, the newly created spin-off of Fontanafredda, under which all of that estate’s best vineyards are now bottled. The house favors a bold, fruit-driven style even though vinification and aging are strictly traditional. Despite their richness and intensity, the wines possess superb balance, not to mention considerable personality. The success of the entry-level bottlings strongly suggests the Baroli will eventually be even better than these currently releases from the 2007 vintage. Oenologist Danilo Drucco told me he was inspired to recreate the classic style he learned under Beppe Colla at Prunotto, where he worked for five years before coming to Fontanafredda. Here’s to hoping he can pull it off. The first efforts are certainly encouraging... " WA 10/2011 I felt very comfortable buying these wines sight unseen as I know the vintage, I know the winemaker and I know the estate. Combine that with the price points of these gems and you have the makings of a total no-brainer.

If anyone on this planet knows the wines of Emilia Romagna it is Giorgio Melandri from the Gambero Rosso guide. Not only is he a veritable tomb of knowledge regarding the wines of this under-appreciated region, he's also a fantastic fellow to have dinner with. Good Food Revolution caught up with him in Italy earlier this year and picked his brains regarding his beloved Sangiovese di Romagna.

Lets See Who’s Paying Attention To The Tipping Point This past Saturday I was feeling a bit “careless” and I wanted to get a feel what the “tipping point” would be to make people REALLY REACT and REALLY JUMP. Man did I find it!!!!!! The process was actually pretty simple…. - I trolled through my Italian inventory - Found a wine I had healthy stock on in the event that there was a BIG response - Stuck my finger in the air and took a guess that a case price of $240 (i.e. $20/Bottle) would be the tipping point - Let the e-mail FLY Long story short….the phones lit up, e-mails came flooding into my in-box and people raced through the front door. 200+ cases of Brunello Di Montalcino sold out in a matter of 2 HOURS!!!! EAK….That’s the tipping point alright.
