Movement outwards Expansion A film I have been working on and off on since 2007. Wasn't able to mold it into what I wanted, but at this point I am just happy to call it done. Regardless I am happy with how it has turned out. Please, Constructive criticism is welcome. Mixture of 16mm shot on a Bolex and my DVX100b (with 35mm adapter and without) Image and effect editing done in Adobe After Effects Sound Design by Dana Billings and Nils Hoover

www.tyviemusic.com Arvo Pärt’s "Spiegel im Spiegel" was originally written for violin and piano, and later re-scored for various other instruments. The version presented in this recital was adapted for horn by English hornist, Dave Lee. Inspired by his performance on his album “Under the Influence,” I decided to perform it myself with my own visual contribution. The piece is written in the tintinnabular style of composition, wherein a melodic voice (operating over diatonic scales) and a tintinnabular voice (operating within a triad on the tonic) accompany each other. It is musically minimal, yet produces a serene tranquility. "Spiegel im Spiegel" in German literally can mean both "mirror in the mirror" as well as "mirrors in the mirror," referring to the infinity of images produced by parallel plane mirrors: the tonic triads are endlessly repeated with small variations as if reflected back and forth. Drawn from theme of “reflection” inferred by the piece’s title, I chose to make a video accompaniment that came to me while sitting in horn warmups held in the Hockett Recital Hall green room. Looking out the window watching the morning sun cast its rays on Whalen inspired my vision to ultimately use the windows as a palette of musical colors. The preceding interview with the composer, coincidentally conducted by my musical heroin, Björk, is an inside look into the mind of Arvo Pärt in how he sees his own music. (originally aired on the BBC Television program, “Modern Minimalists,” 1997)
