There's an article that appears and re-appears in magazines like Cosmopolitan, or Salon that lists the type of guys that women find irresistible against their better interests. Somewhere next to Tattooed Biker and Rich Asshole there's an entry for Intense Brooding Artist. Not having tattoos or mad cash, I always went for the latter typology, and pretty much thought I had it covered at least in the northern part of the county. Turns out I was just posing. After my interview with David, I was left with a new appreciation for what the word "intense" really means. David is irreverent, brutally honest, raw.... and full of talent. His fearlessness, his refusal to back down from the empty void of nothingness, seems to shroud him in a mythic haze. I left this interview feeling that I had passed out on a wooded path after a night of drinking only to awaken in the ken of a Jedi Master who gave me a shot of Hibiki-an while levitating my starship. But this film was directed by Coppala and not Lucas. Thanks David. http://jacquesdebeaufort.com/Studio-Verite

I interviewed Carol the week I was filming the last bit of SANCTUM and SACRUM and snuck away from building a giant fabric web installation to chat with her for the afternoon. I don't think I really had time to process the experience until I began editing, and it is only now that I can see Carol and her work, and how the person and the art fit together in a beautiful interlaced tapestry rich with meaning. Carol's "rigorous" Calvinistic upbringing reminds me of my own Dutch heritage (the "de Beaufort's" were French Huguenots living in Den Haag) and when I look at Carol I see her in a Frans Hals painting. More importantly I appreciate the idea of an artist that is always looking for the unknowns, even after she finds something precious....someone who is forever poking her head through the various membranes of determinism that a belief system, a religion, throws down around us like an iron curtain. And finally I see someone who is not afraid of allowing meaning to remain embedded in an artwork, shrouded in its own immanent mystery, defiant of our awkward attempts at corralling it into some sort of social agenda. If it is true that Beauty has become an act of defiance, then artists like Carol Prusa are the real rebels in the Artworld, and I'm only too happy to wave her flag here. jacquesdebeaufort.com/Studio-Verite

Post studio visit freeway drives are usually full of contemplative moments and this was no exception. I found my mind drifting to so many of those big ideas that one usually keeps in the margins lest they become paralyzed by the implications: the transience of life, the fragility and importance of human relationships..the meaning of it all. Maybe it was because I had just watched "Prometheus" the night before, but I kept picturing some Uber-Creator tinkering away somewhere creating little human beings with the aid of some sort of magic substance that could easily take over and turn everything into a nightmare of mutation. Then I thought about Amy's art, so beautiful and full of melancholy. Then I got off the freeway and went to Target. jacquesdebeaufort.com/Studio-Verite
