Do you know what high performing agile teams get up to in their time off? They use a lean process to build the largest lego set ever produced of course. In this talk we explore what happened to these intrepid engineers as they self-organised themselves into a lean, mean, lego-building machine. Along the way, exploring key concepts from lean software engineering including cycle-time and throughput, continuous process improvement, stopping the line, work-in-progress limits, Systems Thinking and the Theory of Constraints. So, have you ever been a child? Ever played with lego? Ever wondered what self-organisation and lean really look like? If so, come along and learn how Han Solo, Luke Skywalker and Chewie turned 5000 pieces of lego and a 300 page manual into a ship that can do the Kessel run in less than 10 parsecs… James Lewis is a Principle Consultant for ThoughtWorks based in the UK and a member of the ThoughtWorks Technical Advisory Board. Most recently he has been helping to introduce Agile at various blue chip companies: Investment Banks, Publishers and media organisations. Sometimes I even write software. James studied Astrophysics in the 90's but got sick of programming in Fortran. Fourteen years of DBA, Java development, software design and software architecture later, he believes that writing software is the easy part of the problem. Most of the time it's about getting people thinking right. Most recently, James has been spending his time helping ThoughtWorks' clients develop enterprise software as a coding architect and is particularly interested in the design of distributed systems and the web as middleware. Quite a number of ophthalmologists have purchased or are about to purchase the new Sony PMW-10MD full HD camera to record surgery through the operating microscope. This camera uses a pair of SXS Express 34 solid state memory modules to record HD at 1080i with 60 frames per second. Proprietary XDCAM compression is used allowing surgeons to store several hours of video on one or two cards. Editing files compressed with XDCAM and in Sony's folder structure has been a burden. Fortunately, Sony upgraded its plug-ins and drivers for Final Cut Pro 7 and OS 10.6 making editing a joy again. This tutorial explains how to start editing your surgical videos again.
