This is an experiment in the dialectic of the sequence shot. The source material is Orson Welles's Touch of Evil, Jean Renoir's Rules of the Game and William Castle's Strait-Jacket.

As an editor, I often study famous sequences in films..the classic shower scene from Psycho is considered one of the best. We all know (spoiler alert!) Janet Leigh was attacked by a knife-wielding Tony Perkins in the shower. But upon looking at this scene cut-by-cut (no pun intended), I discovered what my eye very clearly sees as a claw hammer in the first cut of a downward strike once the attack starts. I was not looking for a claw hammer...I was looking for a knife. I know this scene is sacrosanct, but I have been editing for about 30 years and there is no way this object is a knife in my eyes. This is the clip in question--the entire sequence can easily be found on Youtube under Psycho shower scene...it's about 1 minute in on the clip I saw. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0WtDmbr9xyY) Very few people agree with me, which is fine...but just wanted to share.

'Touch of Evil' is one of the very best examples, and last, instances of black and white cinema. The film's examination of border drug violence resonates today as much as Citizen Kane, though the film's biggest flaw is its 'reefer madness' propaganda, some of which is included in this clip. That said, the realistic portrayal of the evil of alcohol redeems that flaw completely. Orson Welles wrote, directed and co-starred in this movie with Charlton Heston (in 'brownface'), and Janet Leigh. The gangster barkeep 'Joe Grandi', played by Akim Tamiroff, brings to mind Cheech Marin in 1995's classic 'Desperado'. 'Fair Use' copyright is claimed.

This work is made in direct reference to Janet Leigh's experience in the making of the shower scene of Hitchcock's Psycho. Her replication of the stillness of death was uncanny. She was not able to breathe, blink or move for the duration the camera was panning over her. Her absolute stillness was given extra weight by the fact that she was immortalised in the medium of moving image.

Michael B. Druxman followed his dreams to Hollywood and, although he may not have “reached the stars,” his persistence made it possible for the vast majority of those dreams to come true. His new book, LIFE, LIBERTY & THE PURSUIT OF HOLLYWOOD, continues the story of that remarkable adventure, which he began relating in his first memoir, MY FORTY-FIVE YEARS IN HOLLYWOOD...AND HOW I ESCAPED ALIVE (2010). Returning to his boyhood in Seattle, this new work explores with greater depth Druxman’s journey to Los Angeles where, without any show business contacts whatsoever, he was able to create a successful career for himself as a publicist, playwright, screenwriter, director and Hollywood historian. From Rock Hudson and Christopher Lee to George Raft and Frank Sinatra to playwright Tennessee Williams and legendary producer Roger Corman, the work is filled with amusing stories of Druxman’s encounters and lessons learned from Hollywood’s rich and famous.
