James Kalm, since his arrival in New York over three decades ago, has been an avid visitor to the Whitney. The New Whitney Museum of American Art was designed by architect Renzo Piano. Located overlooking the Hudson River at the southern edge of the world famous Chelsea art neighborhood, this new building includes approximately 50,000 square feet of indoor galleries and 13,000 square feet of outdoor exhibition space. Your correspondent gives viewers a spontaneous stroll through the building, and a cursory viewing of "America Is Hard to See," the debut exhibition featuring over a century's worth of gems from the Whitney's permanent collection.

• Elaine Sturtevant - The Art of Appropriating Art

          03:55

          from KA21 / CastYourArt / Added

What makes art art? Is there an aura of authenticity? Can a copy be an original? Is it reference or usurpation? Who is the author? Appropriation, or „the art of repetition“ as an attack on key notions of art history like authorship, originality, creativity and authenticity: American Elaine Sturtevant (1924-2014) is on display with her complete graphic oeuvre of 100 works in the Albertina. She studied and “repeated” the work of artists of pop art like Jasper Johns (Flags), Andy Warhol (Flowers), and Roy Liechtenstein (Hot Dogs), or of the forefather of conceptual art Marcel Duchamp, taking questions about oeuvre, authorship and originality to a new conceptual level. At the same time she undermined the laws of the art market in a subversive way (e.g. an almost identical Warhol for a fraction of the price). In her blending of conceptual and pop art she copied Duchamp’s reproduced reproductions, so copied originals existed next to original originals and original copies as well as copied copies, adding to the confusion. An everyday object transformed into art, a readymade, becomes a work of art after art after art. (written by Cem Angeli) A film by CastYourArt | www.castyourart.com

Around 100 works from six different institutions associated with the Ludwigs will be brought together. The BELVEDERE shows Jasper Johns: Regrets, his most recent body of work, developed over the last year and a half, including paintings, drawings and prints, based on a photograph of the young artist Lucian Freud perched on a bed, taken around 1964 by the British photographer John Deakin and used by Francis Bacon as source material for his own paintings. Johns incorporated into his work not only the photograph of Freud (most often doubled by its mirrored image), but also the physical qualities of the original black-and-white print, which Bacon had extensively torn and creased in the course of his studio practice. The exhibition is based upon one originally organized by The Museum of Modern Art, New York. Location: Upper Belvedere.

“Popular, mass produced, expendable, cheap, witty, sexy, playful, conspicuous, seductive”-according to Richard Hamilton these are the characteristics that make something interesting and that he also demanded of his own artistic work. What the British artist formulated in 1957as a new standard was considered scandalous at the time. A rejection of the prevailing art and its sublime values originality, authenticity, and “depth”. Pop Art was a liberation for some-and a trivial affront for others. Thanks to Peter and Irene Ludwig, the Museum Ludwig in Cologne holds one of the internationally most significant collections of American as well as British Pop Art. In addition to the Cologne holdings, other parts of this collection are preserved at the mumok in Vienna, the Ludwig Forum in Aachen, and the Kunstmuseum Basel, as well as at the Ludwig museums in Budapest, Koblenz, St. Petersburg, and Beijing. Opening in fall 2014 LUDWIG GOES POP brings together for the first time around 150 key works by the leading figures of this art movement from all institutions associated with the name Ludwig and in the process expands the historical picture of this world-class private collection.
