1. The Joker and the Suit

In 2013, over 10 million people watched Russell Brand explain to Jeremy Paxman why he doesn't vote. As the months tick by and another general election approaches, has anything changed? Do you expect Brand to vote in the next election, and more importantly - should he? Filmed in the Bike Shed Theatre, poet Alastair Gray delivers a fresh view on the aftermath of Brand's Newsnight appearance, challenging viewers to step back from the knee-jerk media backlash and examine the reactions of the interview's enormous audience just as closely as the content itself. Read the full text of the poem below: "There must be some kind of way out of here" Said the Joker to the Suit "There’s too much exclusion Of the apathetic youth" “You and I, we both know that” The suit he glumly spoke “But these are dandy words of trivia From a man who doesn’t vote” And therein lies the rub. We’ve all seen what is now deemed The frost on the Nixon of our age It’s been pasted on walls Embedded in pages And discussed at length over tea But emerging from bearded collision Is most definitely a decision That must be made And I think I’ve found lighthouse focus Amongst the apathetic fog. When the politicians lie And preserve their place in power by Building a fortress of seized wheelchair and Benefit cheques, chowing down In an untaxed haven and throwing us a Gay marriage wishbone once in a while on which We must ravenously feast; There has been a central, driving Stench of corruption Ealing its’ way through our streets We’ve been ignoring the issue. Too placated by stationary, Monolithic screens! But at last The people are stirring The apathetic are becoming app-empowered! We must all band together to GET RUSSELL BRAND TO VOTE! Get russell brand to vote, Too long have we suffered Cast out Rejected by the ruling stale biscuit when, Unbeknownst, our greatest export won’t vote! No wonder it’s been a sinking ship! Cast adrift towards havens of tax! We’ve been left below the mountain With no hint of a ballot stone tablet To shatter the golden brown cow in the commons Well we’ve been rain-dancing in the slums For too long, The man must vote! All along the bell tower A wildcat did growl Brand and Paxman were approaching And the Daily Mail began to howl And the Joker cried out: “Businessmen they drink our wine While most men dig our earth And we must bring them all in line Or it will cost us the earth” “No reason to get excited” The suit he kindly spoke, “There are many here among us Who think you’re such a funny joke” And the mob shackled brand to a ballot box And forced an ‘X’ on the scrap! But you and I We’ve been through that And this is not our fate So let us not talk falsely now. The hour is getting late When the Joker Calls for rational debate And outwits those in power. So what is left for suits to say? From their erect, Inflated, Watchtower.

In this video, political debate becomes a mere residue of speech, amplified then reverberated as metaphor for the unforeseen repercussions of war. The idea comes from Heinrich Böll’s "Dr. Murke and his collection of silences"* where the psychoanalyst edits tape interviews with patients by joining gaps in conversation to make a sequence of silences. * Doktor Murkes gesammeltes Schweigen.
