What is Italy Writes? http://www.johncabot.edu/about_jcu/italy-writes-english.aspx) Building on the tremendous success of JCU's Italy Reads program which, now in its 5th year, has recently been awarded a grant from the Embassy of the United States in Italy in recognition of excellence, JCU has launched Italy Writes, a national English-language writing competition for Italian high school students that includes on its panel of judges professors from one of America's most highly-ranked creative writing centers: the University of Iowa's International Writing Program. Italy Writes engages high school students in the development of their English creative-writing skills and is open to all students enrolled in Italian high schools that do not have English as the primary language of instruction. Students compete annually for awards for the best creative writing piece in the genres of fiction and nonfiction. This national competition takes place each spring and the winners are announced in June at an event sponsored by JCU's Institute for Creative Writing and Literary Translation. This year, students had the honor of receiving their award from the Institute for Creative Writing and Literary Translation's Writer in Residence, Pulitzer Prize winner Jhumpa Lahiri. Ms Lahiri composed and read a greeting especially for our Italy Writes award-winners this year. According to Professor Carlos Dews, Chair of the Department of English Language and Literature and Director of the Creative Writing Institute, "Finding creative expression in a language other than one's own is an exciting exploration of the emotions at the core of the human spirit. Following the lead of Italy Reads, JCU hopes to continue our tradition of providing support for English language learning in the Italian high school community." Italy Writes is wholly funded by John Cabot University. Instructions regarding how to participate in Italy Writes are available on the JCU website. For Italian high school teachers of English who would like to join the more than 40 Italian high schools already participating in Italy Reads, please write italyreads@johncabot.edu for information.

Italy Reads Italy Reads is John Cabot University’s community-based reading and cultural exchange program that began in 2009 with a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts for The Big Read Rome. The Big Read Rome was a great success; students from nearly 20 Italian public and international high schools in Rome read Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird, viewed the film at JCU’s “Cinema Mockingbird,” attended theater productions by the English Theatre of Rome, and actively participated in book discussions with JCU students. The success of The Big Read Rome led John Cabot University to expand this American cultural exchange program to a wider Italian high school community and create our own program which we called Italy Reads. We are pleased to announce that the book for Italy Reads 2012 is F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby.
