The role of the chef has expanded in recent years; chefs don't just run a kitchen anymore -- they manage relationships with purveyors and producers in new ways, play a role in communications, and many are activists who make community involvement a part of their job. The panel will explore why this is the case, and offer inspiration for those who want to expand their own role. (April 6, 2014) Moderator: Brian Halweil, Editor, Edible East End and Co-publisher, Edible Long Island, Edible Manhattan, and Edible Brooklyn | Speakers: Mary Cleaver, Owner and Executive Chef, The Cleaver Company and The Green Table; Liz Neumark, Founder and CEO, Great Performances; Michel Nischan, Chef and CEO, President and Founder, Wholesome Wave; George Weld, Owner and Founding Chef, Egg Restaurant

Do Irish restaurant-goers know the human cost of their meals? We believe Irish consumers care not only about what they eat, but where they eat, in terms of the pay and conditions of the workers who cook and serve their food. Food for Thought is a short social justice film sharing the experiences of low-wage migrant restaurant workers, in the context of the precarious work immigrants and low-wage workers are increasingly doing in recession Ireland. The film weaves together workers’ stories and interviews with trade unionists and economists reminding us that exploitation is bad for workers and bad for business. Also featured are a number of fair employers, who share an important message that it is possible to run a profitable business, abide by the law, and treat your workers with dignity and respect. The film is informed by research MRCI carried out in 2012 with 120 migrant restaurant workers, which identified non-compliance and exploitation as ongoing concerns in this sector. Visit http://www.mrci.ie/our-work/work-labour-migration/ for more information and to join the fight for rights, empowerment, and justice for low wage workers and migrants.

A local artist, activist and leader in the Just Food movement, Amy Franceschini's reputation most certainly precedes her. A huge force behind the City Hall Victory Gardens, partly funded by Haight Ashbury Council, and the creator of numerous works linking nature, food, art and activism, today she was pitching in on the OCCUPY movement. Kezar Gardens donated native plants to her to bring to OCCUPY Gil Tract, land owned by UC Berkeley, that has been turned into an educational farm by OCCUPY protesters.
