How Can a Boy feature documentary film is available as a Video On Demand at http://vimeo.com/ondemand/howcanaboy. How can a ten year-old boy survive on his own in a refugee camp? This is the question that Nimrod Andrew asks himself and us in this heart wrenching examination of the often hidden burden of loss, ever present in the emotions of many of the world’s refugees. Burma has been at war with its own people for over 50 years, people who want only to stay on their land, maintain their livelihoods and live in peace. It was there that Nimrod fled from his village as a little boy, his ethnic group, the Karen, under mortar attack by Burmese soldiers. Somehow he survived 14 years in a refugee camp eventually making his way to Canada and to safety. But loss traveled with him and now Nimrod tries to face the burden he feels every day. Why is he one of the lucky ones to survive the horrors of the civil war? His questions take him back to Thailand and to risk entering Burma illegally. He has to tell the world about what is going on and in the process searches for himself as a child. In this intimate portrayal of a remarkable young man, How Can a Boy exposes the horrors of Burma’s civil war and exposes the painful truth about what it means to be a refugee. “What a success! Congratulations on such a beautiful film. I laughed, cried and felt outrage. Nimrod you are a treasure, Ottawa hit pay dirt by gaining you!
