This documentary was shot just a few months after Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans. I was returning from New Orleans as a DP on another documentary about the children orphaned by the storm. I was so emotionally struck by what I witnessed: entire neighborhoods washed away and destroyed, that I called my good friend and producer Tom Lawrence. I told him we needed to make a short documentary that would give viewers a sense of what had happened. Over the next several weeks we spent our weekends shooting material for the documentary. It was a very sad and emotional time, though every once in a while we witnessed and heard from some of the city's residents the will and determination of people. In the end, the documentary is more of a think piece - a slice of a moment in time. On a more personal note, two of the people involved in this documentary recently passed away: Charles Borne, who plays the piano in the video, was my step father. He was a good man who loved New Orleans with all his soul. Also, my co-producer and very good friend Tom Lawrence, whose passion, will, and great spirit showed in all his endeavors. This was the last independent project we worked on together. Director, co-producer, editor: Mikon Haaksman, co-producer, DP: Tom Lawrence, Still photographers: Theresa Strong & Misty Green Haaksman

"After Katrina: Andrew & Jamie's Story" Marla talks with a couple from New Orleans, Andrew and Jamie Nadeau, who was evacuated to the Knoxville area during Hurricane Katrina. The evacuation was complicated because the wife was literally in the middle of chemotherapy for cancer at the time of the evacuation. They found themselves in Tennessee without their medical records and in need of continued treatment. Their story is an incredible one. For the taping of this episode, the crew also traveled to New Orleans and begin to look into the recovery efforts eight months after Katrina.
