Ken Smith is one of the best-known of a new generation of landscape architects equally at home in the worlds of art, architecture, and urbanism. Trained in both design and the fine arts, he explores the relationship between art, contemporary culture, and landscape. His practice, WORKSHOP: Ken Smith Landscape Architect, was established in 1992 and is based in New York City with a southern California office in Irvine. He is committed to creating landscapes, especially parks and other public spaces, as a way of improving the quality of urban life. Much of his work pushes beyond traditional landscape typologies - plaza, street, and garden - to landscapes that draw on diverse cultural traditions and influences of the contemporary urban landscape. Smith's approach is directed at projects of varying scales and types: temporary installations, private residential gardens, public spaces, parks and commercial projects. With a particular emphasis on projects that explore the symbolic content and expressive power of landscape as an art form, the WORKSHOP specializes in the investigation of new expressions in landscape design. Ken Smith is a graduate of Iowa Sate University and the Harvard University Graduate School of Design. He has taught and lectured at Harvard, the City College of New York, and other universities and institutions around the world. Smith's work has been published widely in the popular and trade press.

Some friends and I created this spoof of the Office for a Post-its video contest, which we shot at Wright Business Graphics in Kent. The facility gave our production quite the look and perhaps helped us into the final round, though ultimately, our video didn't take home the big cash prize. Still, being a finalist isn't so bad. This spot features Austin Farwell, Montana von Fliss, Anne Kennedy, Genevieve Kolve, Mikey Place, Brandon Petty, Jose Rufino, Angela Seretis, Ken Smith, Sam Tsubota, Sadie Zimmerman and myself.

Ivor Bowen's film of Ken Smith reading 'Three docklands fragments', from the DVD-book IN PERSON: 30 POETS, filmed by Pamela Robertson-Pearce & edited by Neil Astley (Bloodaxe Books, 2008). These poems by Ken Smith are from SHED: POEMS 1980-2001 (Bloodaxe Books, 2002). Ken was the first poet to be published by Bloodaxe Books, back in 1978. His old friend Ivor Bowen filmed him at his home in East Ham, London, in January 2002. Ken contracted Legionnaire's Disease in Cuba the following year, and later died after contracting an infection in hospital in 2003. Ken Smith was a major figure in world poetry. Once dubbed 'the godfather of the new poetry', his politically edgy, cuttingly colloquial, muscular poetry influenced a whole generation of younger British poets, from Simon Armitage to Carol Ann Duffy. His work shifted territory with time, from rural Yorkshire, America and London to the war-ravaged Balkans and Eastern Europe (before and after Communism). His early books span a transition from a preoccupation with land and myth to his later engagement with urban Britain and the politics of radical disaffection. 'Three Docklands fragments' are representative of just one vein of his later poetry. We all miss him terribly, and it's just great to be see and hear him again, captured on film by Ivor. (And thanks again, Ivor, for letting us include your film in our project.)
