June 28, 2015 was the final day of the annual Carriage Association of American Festival Show. This judged pleasure drive sets out early Sunday morning for a trot through the Kentucky Horse Park and a few adjacent private farms. Turned out in their Sunday best, drivers from all over the country displayed a great variety of horses and carriages. From a magnificent coach pulled by four tall warmblood horses to an adorable miniature horse with a two wheeled meadowbrook cart- this outing is a rare treat to see in such a pristine pastoral setting. This video shows only the first five to pass, those which were drawn by four horses. The full parade of carriages lasted about an hour. Through the opening titles and as the first coach passes, we enjoy the clear strains of the coach horn played by Raymond Tuckwiller. (edited out of sequence for the titles) We could hear the horn (sometimes called a “yard of tin”) from quite a distance, before the coaches could be seen and long before the sound of the horses or rumbling wheels could be heard. The horn was used traditionally to warn travelers on the road of the approaching coach, to signal their arrival to the various stops on a scheduled route, and to entertain the passengers during the journey. The clarity and carrying power of this instrument is perfectly demonstrated here as Raymond was not aboard that first coach but was a ways back on the second. He was not playing as he passed but can you spot him standing with his horn? You may also notice that of the five drivers, four of them are women. While women are well represented in the sport of carriage driving, this gender imbalance is not typical in the coaching divisions. The World Coaching Club (open only to women who own and drive their own four in hand) hosted a meet at the Kentucky Horse park concurrent with the CAA Festival which might explain the wonderful representation of talented women whips.
