Whilst the Commission's war cemeteries and memorials in places like France and Belgium are well-known, the presence of 170,000 graves in the United Kingdom is a fact which surprises many people. The Commission is determined to make more people aware of these graves, as well as the Memorials to the Missing, on which the names of 130,000 casualties are enscribed. The first new sign, informing people that there are graves contained in a municipal cemetery, was erected at Bishopwearmouth Cemetery in Sunderland. Local MP and War Graves Commissioner Kevan Jones was there to unveil the sign, helped by the Commission's Regional Supervisor for the area, Stephen Liversage. Over the next few months, the Commission plans to erect many more signs, to help members of the public to find out more about those Commonwealth war casualties who are commemorated in the UK.
