For the travel organization snp I went to morocco to photograph and film the taragalte festival close to m’hamid. I decided to book a flight to marrakech because I had never been there. I arrived late at night and drove into town. Which was kind of troubling because I don’t speak french, I didn’t have enough fuel and my navigation broke down! The traffic was insane, but somehow I found my way to the hotel. The next morning Marrakech was beautiful. I lost myself in the souk and was absolutely stunned by the light, the people and the scenery. After a few days i took off to the desert, a 500km drive over the mountains after which the landscape slowly turns into an endless nothingness.. then the road ends and you’re standing facing the Sahara, and somewhere in there is a festival.. The video is shot with a canon 5D and mostly with s Sigma 24-70 2.8 lens. The music is recorded during the festival. We are three independent filmmakers telling the story of the most remote music festival in the world - the Festival au Desert - and the battle to make it happen. Once a year, just outside of Timbuktu, the greatest rock and blues musicians from across Africa and around the world come together to sustain peace through music. What makes this festival so unique? First, it’s held in the mystical land of Tuareg nomads where camels race during the day and, when the temperature drops, the desert moon rises, the sand dunes shift, and the festival-goers become immersed in the complex musical rhythms that have been rocking this desert for the last thousand years. While the music plays musicians speak and sing about local issues including the rights of women, of Tuaregs, and of the celebration of Islam. The festival is a homegrown approach to sustaining peace, democracy, and for developing tourism in Mali. Please support the Essakane Film on Kickstarter: http://kck.st/bBzHmf

Another great performance from Arby and her band, albeit her having a bit of a sniffle. I chalk it up to August in New York. For more of Michal’s world music videos, visit http://inter-muse.com

The Last Song Before the War is a feature-length documentary that captures the inspiring rise and uncertain future of Mali’s annual Festival in the Desert. The festival history is told from the perspective of the co-founder and festival director, Manny Ansar, the musicians who perform and the intrepid travelers from around the world who make the long journey to attend the festival. Against the backdrop of stunning musical performances, the film subtly reveals the challenges and triumphs of creating an artistic event in such challenging economic and political circumstances. After 12 years of success and unforgettable musical moments, the Festival in the Desert came to a halt in 2012 when separatist rebels and Islamic militants seized control of Northern Mali. The Last Song Before the War chronicles the 2011 Festival—arguably the last edition that still captured its original goals—a global display of peace, reconciliation, and the healing power of music.
