The theme of the 2013 festival is: Know Your Roots (Calgary!). The conversation about our theme started at the table with our programming committee when one member told a story about his experience in one of Calgary’s first Pride Parades. Conversations erupted and some of the younger members at the table stated, “If you don’t tell us; we won’t know. And these stories can’t be lost! http://www.fairytalesfilmfest.com/events/film-festival/2013-festival/ Younger members were surprised at what had been overcome and how things have changed. Many of us realized how much we had fought for in the past and what we were taking for granted now. Armed with the intention to tell our stories and preserve our history, the programmers embarked on a journey to capture what it has meant to be queer in Calgary over the last fifty years. We filmed vignettes of local Calgary queer-heroes and heroines that will be premiered during the 2013 Fairy Tales Queer Film Festival. Arrive at the theatre early – we’ll be screening them before our features. A BIG THANKS to Madeiline Hardy and Matthew McKinney, our commissioned filmmakers for "Know Your Roots". We could not share this exciting project without their creative energy and enthusiasm. Know Your Roots Project Welcomes The Rozsa Foundation! Calgary's Rozsa Foundation is supporting the Know Your Roots Project. The Rozsa Foundation first came on board with Fairy Tales in 2012 as a supporter of the Youth Queer Media Program (YQMP), which is now established as an annual program and festival event. I met Dmize a while back through mutual friends. At that time he was DJin' and i knew him more for music. Later i realized who he was. I consider him one of Hawaii's OG of Graffiti with epic stories of the past, without dwelling and looking always into the future. A real friend and awesome homie. Know Your Roots is a new series on people who help shape Hawaii Hip-Hop. There is no exact path on who will get interviewed, its all situational. I hope you enjoy. Don't Sleep.
