{The $2 Kopitiam} Noodles, noodles, noodles. Today's little story is about 60 year old 'Uncle' Ah Cai who has been in the kopitiam (coffeeshop) noodle trade for the last 2 decades. A rare find in Singapore's CBD, Ah Cai's '$2 kopitiam' makes and serves 8 different kinds of noodles and hasn't raised prices for the last 22 years. It remains at only $2.00 per bowl. Come with us on this early 3am start, as we follow Uncle Ah Cai's daily routine while he shares with us his kopitiam tale, from opening to closing. Brings you back to the good old days. Delicious and yet affordable!! Our recommendation will be the Laksa, it's a 'must try'! Do drop by for a visit and try the noodles, you'll be spoilt for choice. Frenzlink Cafeteria No. 62 South Bridge Road Singapore 058692 Opening Hours: Mon - Fri, 6am - 3pm {Special Thanks} Uncle Cai, wife, staffs and patrons Dave Seah, Sid Lim, Michael Chin TheMomentum

A project funded by iRememberSG, as part of Singapore Memory Project for SG50 Kopitiams are everywhere in Singapore but where once they were run by individuals and reflected their quirks and idiosyncracies, many have now become cookie cutter outlets dispensing cheap food and no service. Our documentary takes a sneak peek into the lives of three kopitiam owners who still run their own spaces. We see their love for their trade and hear about their struggles to stay afloat in the cut-throat F&B business. In an era where chain restaurants and curated cafes reign supreme, these owners insist on pressing on. And what they serve is more than a simple cup of kopi. Sometimes it’s a refuge. Sometimes it’s a memory. Most of the time, it’s a sense of belonging. Director - June Cheong Producer - Sam Kang Li Editor - Ang Guangzheng Trailer Editor - Lam Xinying

This video is part of Chope! – A project that explores the peculiar and eccentric lingoes of Singapore’s Kopitiam culture. Often a mishmash of words from various dialects and culture, one would be surprised by the creativity and originality behind our eclectic Kopitiam culture. We, Singaporeans are an interesting bunch. Our overwhelming Kopitiam culture is filled with eccentricities that range from choping seats, to quirky table manners, to endearing ways of addressing our servers as Uncle and Auntie. But perhaps the most peculiar of all is the language in which we order drinks. Some of these lingoes are as old as our forefathers, evolving over generations, while others are relatively new additions. No one really knows their origins, but one thing is for sure: they all display a queer sense of humor unique to our culture. Crème de la Caffè (CDLC) is a university project pioneered by 3 individuals from Singapore's Nanyang Technological University (NTU). Inspired by our own experience and that of other baristas, CDLC aims to explore the stories behind each up of coffee, the ubiquitous barista community, and the existing coffee culture in Singapore. This is the second of two documentary videos that CDLC has to offer. In this video, we explore a uniquely Singaporean twist on coffee culture - the ubiquitous coffee shop, more affectionately referred to by locals as "kopitiam". We find out more about how the older folks running such traditional establishments are passionate about what they do, and the experiences of these local "baristas". A Cup Of Tradition features Jo, a local barista in one of Singapore's many "kopitiams" who has been making coffee for almost 10 years. ---------------------- Song: Ambient Electronica by Cottonwool Dawn Made with iMovie
