In 1890, just one year after the Mersey Bluff Lighthouse was built, the Tasmanian towns of Formby and Torquay were united to form what we know today as Devonport. To say Devonport is picturesque would be a harsh understatement. The place has views for days: when compared to some of the other stops it is a serenity machine. The skatepark is just a stone's throw from the Bluff, and it sits right on the water. This means exquisite sunny days, but occasionally there will be a wind blowing. Saturday was one of the windy ones; well I would say it was more of a gale. full article over here. http://sba.org.au/Blog/2013-nike-sba-am-series-tas-qualifier-results Stop #5 – Devonport Saturday 9th of January Words: Morgan Campbell Photos: Matty Hooker Video: Shane Fowler + Scott Atkins

Stop five of the 2012 Nike SbA Am Series took the wolf pack to Devonport in the North of Tasmania. Nestled in between Mersey Bluff and the mouth of the Mersey River, Devonport Skatepark is easily the most picturesque of the series. Crew trekked from all over the isle to check out and enter the comp. Assistant judges were Melbourne’s Mike Martin and certified Tasmaniac and ruler Chris “Dix” Smith. Backing up MC Fludicrous on the mic was Jimmy “Jimmy’s” McMacken. Jimmy’s crew had the BBQ cranking over on the East side of the park. Where the judges sat was actually directly above the site of the old Devonport Bowl: a fierce and intimidating capsule that tamed even the most seasoned all rounders. The bowl is still there; just nowadays it is buried under a skatepark! The park has a little bit of everything: rails, bump to ledges, hubbas, out ledges, pyramid, ledges, and a Euro-gap garnished with a behemoth of a vert wall. Over the last year a massive surf club has popped up right next to the park complete with a Flude-approved playground. While we were in town there were a plethora of events on including a surf life saving competition, a running race, a bike race, a kite festival and the legendary Devonport Teddy Drop. Lets get down to what we are here for though: the skating. continued here: http://skateboardingaustralia.org.au/Blog/nike-sba-2012-am-series-tasmanian-qualifier
