I know what you're thinking… not a whole lot of blog posts up here… yes, we know. I actually stopped blogging soccer a year ago and headed more into the social/digital sector and dabbled in communications and media. This is a hobby - a labor of love. Thus the snippets of photography and live-tweeting you may see out there from me. I digress though. Let's get to the actual story... Earlier this year, I had a strange idea. A quick phone call to a co-founder of Women United FC, and initial seeds were sown. Why not help WUFC have a larger voice in the world of soccer commentary and promotions. All I had known was that the WUFC had a large following of women (and some men) around the USA supporting, as vociferously as they could, the beautiful game and looking out for its successful expansion and growth. They had been best known for bringing together women from around the country to rally behind their shared love for soccer. I'd been a WUFC supporter in theory and a member but rarely contributed in any tangible way because I did not know how to add something useful as a blogger or tweeter. Instead I wanted to help WUFC become something more than a social media conglomerate often in the background and not always treated with the respect it deserved from the soccer media world. Enter WUFC Media. Kristi and I tossed around a few ideas and thought yes, let's try a pilot project: a media channel, purely online media of course. 2013 was a bit of an experiment in that way. Learning the ropes of sports photography, some storytelling on video, epic game nights, interviews with MLS players and coaches, press conferences, a trip to the MLS All-Star Game and video recap, the birth of the WUFC podcast (thanks to Josie) and the beginning of some fun and engaging social media tweeting by fresh voices like Miranda. It all culminated in the MLS Final Cup last night. As some of you know, we are a fledgling group, slowly navigating our way through the world of soccer media. Unlike most media efforts I work with, this was particularly close to my heart - soccer is one of my first loves. I started playing when I was 8, which back then (haha, not going to tell you how long ago it was) was a huge deal. I played till I was 12 and there was no more soccer for girls in my area (not at all like NJ now where soccer is as common as baseball). And my love for soccer lay dormant. Till post-college and a special friend changed my life by reintroducing me to my passion. I am at heart a believer in helping others find their voice, a way to share their stories or a way to become storytellers. So WUFC Media had a good first run where I was able to lay some groundwork and stepping stones for the next generation. It is my intention and hope that young women interested in communications and media for sports will join in next year if we decide to continue on this road. The voice of WUFC is unique. It is a collective voice. It is women's voices and it is also the voice of the men who support us and cheer us on! We hope to bring you a new WUFC next year! If you're interested in applying to be a media intern or volunteer with us, we're looking for serious writers, photographers and soccer aficionados - for now, women only. Hey, sorry, guys have quite a few other options and for now, we are focused on helping women in sports find a voice where they can grown their talents. Stay tuned for more details at the start of the new year! And with that, I wish to share a video recap of the year. I wish I could have included every game, every interview, but we didn't want you sitting here forever :) A special thank you to Matt Kassel (Philadelphia Union), Jack McInerney (Philadelphia Union), Chris Pontius (DC United), AJ DeLaGarza (LA Galaxy), Graham Zusi (Sporting KC), Matt Besler (Sporting KC), CJ Sapong (Sporting KC), Chris Wondolowski (San Jose Earthquakes), Chris Wingert (Real Salt Lake) and all the MLS communications directors and media coordinators for all their assistance. And a big thank you to the media pros I met along the way who always made me feel welcome as a photographer and in the press box. Enjoy! Thank you! - Chandrima
